Rex Garrod does have dementia but is alive, last time I read on the topic. I don't know anything else about his health.

I've confirmed that he has Alzheimers (was told this by a long-time friend Tim Hunkin). There's also a facebook group called "We Love Rex Garrod" where you can send well-wishes.
