Some of the reviews of the cheap RXs on GiantCod aren't great but seem to be more related to range issues.
The only cheapy DSM2 receiver I've used is this model:

and I've not had any problems with it. Everything failsafed as expected when I had to use it as a replacement in Drumroll at the champs and it now seems to have gone down in price. £7.28 is almost getting silly, but I'm not going to complain.

People complain about the range issues, but they are designed to have a short range like the parkflyer models from Spektrum. Shouldn't be an issue for robot use.
