and the removable link can it be under a hinged flap or must it be on show?

It can be under a hinged flap, but you must be able to access it without the use of tools. So if you can just lift the hinged flap up with your fingers, it's fine; if you have to use a screwdriver to undo a bolt or screw to lift it up, it's a no-no.

instead of a hinge maybe use a stiff bolt that attaches the cover this can be rotated out the way to show the link

or get a magnet so it stays down but u can lift it up
