does anyone know how you get into the internals of one?

when checking my charger, i accedently let the power cables touch and it shorted out, i hear a loud crack

There's a reason it's sealed. You're not meant to get inside it. Don't bother playing with 240V AC electronics, that's a whole different ball game compared to hooking up a 9.6v nimh battery pack. Dump the power supply, learn your lesson and buy a new one.

^ what he said. If you don't know how to get inside then you should definitely not go inside!

These type of power supplies generally contain no servicable parts.

However you may find that a local TV repair shop can look at it for you.

For the cost it would be cheeper to replace than repair.

to be honest, i dont want to go messing around with things like this. its best if i learn a lesson from it and just buy a new one

I would look at getting on with short circuit protection or fit a fuse to the positive lead you are using that's rated towards the upper end of what the power supply will give. Either method should protect any accidents in the future.
