My mate and I were looking at electric strimmers last night that run off battery power. He has an idea about using the motors to run a spinner. If we can get them for pretty much nothing would that work or are there better ways to go about it?
whats the output power and rpm?
Finding it very tough to get a decent spec on this one. Only thing I can find about it is 8000rpm at 18v
depending on it's size it might well be usable. 8000rpm sounds towards the high end of the scale so it's likely to need slightly higher gearing to get enough torque to spin up a disc quickly but if you're gonna be using it on a drum like one of the cads i seen the other day, should be fine. And if it's free/cheap as hell then go for it!
Ahh yes, the CADs of the drum spinner, the plan for the drum pod is a speed 900 motor, not too sure when that will get made though. The lifter will probably take priority so we can run that at Edinburgh and have the drum sorted by next years UK Champs.
That was for a heavier vertical spinner that a mate of mine is planning on his return from Japan, so going by what you've said it sounds like it would be pushing it a bit.
8000rpm at 18V is roughly 444rpm/volt, which is slower than a Speed 900 by approximately 100rpm/volt so depending on what voltage you run it on you could go for a ratio around the 2.5:1 mark for a good balance between torque and speed. Although if the motor doesn't pack much of a punch on its own a higher ratio would be the better option.
Any idea of the dimensions of it or the weight?

Thats the link, going by other sources the weight of the whole thing is around 1.5kg, but that could be wrong. Going by reviews it was fairly useless as a strimmer so maybe it'll be more useful as spare parts.
It was for a different spinner though, was still planning to use the speed 900 motor on Cicatrix.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was a 'speed 540' or '750' motor in that, given it's running off a standard cordless pack. (as the numbers suggest they're quite a bit smaller than a speed 900)
Yeah I doubt it'll be much more than an average motor, but for the price it might be worth getting it just to mess around with.
It's quite odd but interesting reading the description; the charger is broken and is not charging the battery so he has put it up for sale, yet if it was one of us we'd probably be able to spot the problem and/or just tinker with bits or replace them with bits from a multitude of spare parts in order to get it working again.
Then again we might just cannibalise it for the motor
I was thinking that, if the motor is rubbish then i'll see if I can get it working and sell it on ebay again
I've become interested to find out about it so might place a nice low bid on it and if I get it and break it it doesn't matter too much.
