Thread: 2011 Robo Challenge UK Championships. April 15-17, NEC

Plainly it should just be 'unable to get out of pit for 30 seconds then eliminated'. If a machine is able to climb out and the fight's not ended why not let it.. two pennies

No need to quit to make the rules simpler (it doesn't).

Proposals for revisions to the judging rules will be published in the next couple of weeks.

Should bot's be built to the rules ?
Should the rules be altered for the bot's?

Should bot's be built to suit the arena?
Should the arena be changed to suit different bot's?

    Could go round in circles.

Higher arena walls means more advantage for non flippers and disadvantage for flippers people can argue that it is also not fair? If you build a bot with the serious intention of winning, making it not suitable for the arena is down to the builders design choice which in my opinion should not really affect arena design. Like Craig said the arena is a bit small for them and the sides are too low. My view without causing offence is that to make the bot's a certain size is the builders choice.

Like it or not the most successful robots have always been pushers, flippers & spinners. You only have to look at all the different robot competitions all round the world and the top ranking bot's to see this. There are also a great number of arena designs which have not altered this out come. Each weapon type has the potential to win but its how it's designed and controlled which ultimately decides the outcome.

Ever since I first started following Robot Wars there as been constant discussions and some arguments to what is fair. We've talked about limiting weapon power, arena design, limiting costs and much more. But these are usually only to suit a minority of builders at the disadvantage of a larger majority of the community.

This is the first and maybe last time I will comment like this as I try not to upset people and stay pretty neutral within the community. I understand that because I don't have much time to build and appear at events any more, that people may feel that my opinion may not count. But I could not prevent myself on this occasion.

Just also like to say sorry to Robo Challenge for hijacking your thread. Looks like you put on a great event and a excellent show for builders to come and battle there creations. Well done.

To quote myself a little more clearly

I had decided not to run Seraph or the new Tron again, just after the event anyway,

I mentioned not running them because the rules were being looked at by Kane.

We are revisiting the judging rules specifically to look at situations like this. Furthermore we will be forming specific rules for different competition formats such as the Annihilator.

In many ways I agree with Chris both Seraph and New Tron were designed for the big arenas, Robo Challenges arena is great but they only put on one or two events per year.

What I was trying to avoid is exactly what has happened A long and protracted explanation on what first appeared a simple decision By removing the only robot that can guarantee to get out of Robo challenges pit, the rules can be made simpler and interpreted easier. As I can't imagine anyone daft enough to make A joke like Seraph. especially after all this.
In an attempt to stop any more discussion on the matter I will not post on here again. Just to say thanks to Robo Challenge for putting on a great event congrats to all the winners and Team Saint Loves You All.

    yey! Feeling the loves

I think the rule does still need clarification though as there are other machines that if placed in the pit could get themselves out (in theory), some of the powerful flippers jump to mind. I think it's always good to get a bit of discussion going on the ins and outs of rules.

I respect your decision but the champs are going to be a damn site duller without Seraph & Tron 2.
Mind you, don't stop just for arguing & rule changing. If it wasn't this, it'd be the led colour again.
Oh & I would be one to make a joke like Seraph but I doubt I'd enter it into the champs .

I think it would be a shame not to see Seraph at any future events, but I suppose its your decision. It might be manic to watch, but it is something different and on youtube when watching videos that Seraph is involved in it is always the robot you notice first and it would be a shame if that was lost, even if just for robot challenge.

If you are making the decision for yourself that is one thing, but don't let the rules and arena layouts prevent you from displaying robots that are possibly the most unique and noticable around at the moment.

    Glyn:

Since I was in one of those fights, I'd make the point that robots are usually counted out for 30/10 seconds, because robots can lose control for a number of reasons and get it back. A robot that has left the arena and clearly has no means to continue or regain mobility IN the arena, then its out by knockout. Until we see a robot that can get back in the arena, thats the way it is.

BTW, In my fight with you, you hit the outer wall before I hit the inner wall, my link came out when I hit the inner wall, so I was still mobile as you exited.
