The strange thing about the planet 5 though is that the controller has five channels, while the reciever has seven. Is there any reason to this?
One of the extras is likely to be a battery port, the other, maybe a secodary elevator port like the AR500 has, I'll check the picture
Its not the battery port, it has seven channels. I can post a picture if you like.
What cheap high torque servos would you guys recommend? For my first antweight, I'm going to go for something simple - a pushbot with lifting spikes.
So far, for my shopping list I just have:
- Planet 5 trans/rec set
- HDPE
Anything else I need apart from the servos? I have some mini go cart wheels years ago from lego mindstorms somewhere, but I can't remember if they would be the right scale, or give good traction.
The Park HPXF tends to be quite good...most powerful, pushy ants these days use motors though, Pololu 50:1 HP gearmotors are what I use on Jigsaw and a few other people use on their ants for maximum torque.
I want a good balance between weight and power, of course. Better to have weight to spare. The Park HPXF weighs 19g apparently, and costs £10.99.
Been thinking about having a servo per wheel. That's 76grams for approx 44 quid. Worth it?

You will, but four motors + a controller will weigh something like 50g at most, and be a lot faster and more powerful than servos.
Ah, okay. I thought getting into speed controllers is scary complex for someone who hasn't done this before.
