    That motor I would say about 50-60 amps but I would not want to stall it for too long as it will damage the motor and anything on that circuit.

    I would advise against using a speed controller on any electric axe, just use some big relays, you dont need speed control and it will blow the speedo.

    Re damage it is the sudden stop, that would do the damage, the motor is not designed to take those forces for too long. I would agree with Alan, relays coupled together to make a reversing contractor and a couple of micro switches would soften the blow for the motor on the axe arm movement limits. also they would be a little cheaper £12 for the lot!!
