Thread: Roaming Robots - Battle Antz Kit

  1. #1
Do you want the honest truth?

I really don't think that they're worth it. Sorry jonno.

It's just that you could easily build a cheap ant from parts around the house for half the amount of money, and it will be the proper weight as well.

Sure, the Battle Ants may be a great feat of engineering, but surely you guys could post a tutorial on how to build a proper antweight, rather than letting the lazy people among us buy a kit which will do everything for us, and yet they have no clue on how it works? Sure, they will read the instructions and the circuit diagram, and get a vague idea on how to build it, but will they actually know how to repair it? No. And that is why I don't like antweight kits.

Don't get me wrong, I ADORE the featherweight kits, as they are brilliant way to get people into combat, but I also feel that fighting your robot with a different colour scheme can get pretty tiresome after a while.

Most of what I have said above is complete rubbish, but I stand by my point about fighting the same robot.

I just think that it would be nice to add some variety into the fights.

the whole point of these kits whether it be the battle ratz or ant weights is to get people into the sport via an easier route. you see a lot of people who get stuck and end giving up on a feather weight project where as introduction via a kit lets you get to a finished robot and experience the basics of the sport.

when i first joined it was the zeobot kits which were the kit option, they cost more than the battle ratz and well weren't the best i have to say, but it introduced me to the world of robots which was great.

i think that post was a bit harsh and not needed i think it's a good idea as even now i wouldn't know how to build a decent antweight and i've been doing robots for nearly 6 years now, so for a younger enthusiast it would be a great way into the sport

I understand. My first post was obviously a bit harsh. I tried to delete it, but because of the way this forum is, I couldn't. SO the best I could do was the double post.

    IGNORE THE FIRST POST.

The second post is the correct one.

There's lots of ant build guides if you know where to look, the RW101 forum - which is where almost all the antweight builders congregate - is a pretty good place to start.

I personally quite like these kits, there should be a fair few people with 'proper' 150g antweights at each RR event who'd be happy to put them into the arena and fight (and hopefully beat! heh) the superant kits, and that would be a brilliant demonstration of what can be done with the antweight class - hopefully we can hand out our usual leaflets then and recruit a few more new ant builders ^^

I would however disagree strongly with this:
these 150g little machines have developed so much that equally with the feather weight class, it has become more and more expensive and challenging to build a new competitive machine.
Personally I don't think the cost has increased to any great extent, it's possible to build a very strong base for an antweight for only about a tenner or so more than the cost of the kit, minus radio gear, and newcomers with rather cheaply built machines have made the top six at recent events so I don't think you necessarily need to spend to be competitive a lot of it's as much down to luck and driving as it is to build quality and weaponry.

i think they are a good idea.

personally i'd never consider spending time building my own ant weight from stratch but i'd be tempted to buy one of these just so i can have a go with ants.

I just find it sort of 'cheating' going over the weight limit and fighting against scratch built antweights.

    It's like cheating, but... Cheating.

You are pushing you're luck a bit Jonno :P

I don't think the kits will be allowed at 'official' antweight events, just at RR events if I understand correctly.
