im thinking about building a off road go kart with my brother and a friend, and i was wondering if anyone here has built one or has any advice for me.

im not really expecting it to come to £100 nor do i want it too. im hoping to spend around £200 by the time its finished.
Im finishing up this thing! About 70 £ spent allready!
One good thing to use is a car steering linkage/rod thingy.
On the pic u see thad my buggy has a simple go kart style one, and it worked reallly bad, was too touchy!
The one I was building was very similar to that, Just a bit more compact.

Here I was going to have the engine and axle mounted in to a rear swing arm as one piece
But as you can see in the next few pics I changed the whole back end and decided to go for fully independent suspension
Each suspension arm had a really long coilover shock absorbers so that each arm moved up and down independently. Alot better for off roading this way. Having axles solid mounted for off roading is no good, the rides really uncomfortable and you will find going over rough land your wheels will leave the ground and you wont go anywhere. having each arm independently mounted to a shock absorber the wheels are constanly being forced to the floor so you always have drive.
im always making projects like this. if you havent already subscribed to me on youtube you might want to. You might get some cool ideas, ill be uploading a video of a kart im building in a few days.
But if its a first buggy/go kart its best not to go with suspension. Building the suspension system is difficult, takes a lot more time and costs more. If you just want to have fun in your backyard and want to get it built in 2-3 weekends (time it took my buggy to get this far) i would go with simple bolted on axles..Originally Posted by xtreme

I'm building a tricycle with a friend pretty much as we speak, today I'm off to town to find some decent back wheels. I'll get pics up when I can. The thing about this project is that it is not very good. You see, we're not yet good enough with a welder to weld it. We're putting it together almost entirely with nuts and bolts (100% from scratch), using extremely heavy box section. The front end is a bicycle that was found in a river, lol.
The engine we have is only until we can use/find/buy a bigger one. It's an old petrol 1,5hp industrial water pump engine. With a ratio of about 2.4/1, we hope to have decent acceleration instead of a higher top speed. With good acceleration comes the feeling of it being fast.
All in all it's not very good. We have this heavy box section frame built without plans or anything. Just eye'd up, tbh. It's a very first project, what we'll probably do later is take this engine out, and using the frames over-the-top strengh, we'll put in a much larger engine, a good 6hp atleast, and take the engine in it at the moment, and build up a small mini-moto style thing, with the left over metal and wheels.
Very fun, but after going at it for a good 4 days, we're going to leave it for a week or so. We're making silly mistakes and starting to get at eachother. Two 14 year olds + silly hours = arguments.
does anyone know where i can get some simple plans for free? im going to make the design mostly myself but id rather have some to use as a template. also will a gassless mig welder be able to weld the frame for the kart, or will i have to get something a bit better?
