Off on holidays for a fortnight, so no new battles until then.

Okay, seen as there€™s been a bit more activity around here lately I€™ll continue, but it€™d help my motivation if you guys could post a bit more in this thread, a few fights seem to be ignored ïÅ

Anyhow, we€™ve reached the final of the second annihilator!

But before the fight gets underway, let€™s take a look at how these two got this far!
In round 1 Minesweep3r bit the bullet via default.
In round 2 Bloody Frigid was flipped up and out by Liar 2.
    In round 3 #5 ranked Gabriel V lost a tight judge€™s decision.
In round 4 O.I.D was stacked up against the arena wall and counted out.

Both machines have certainly proved their worth in this annihilator, but which one can prevail here and advance to the competition finals?

From Enschede in the Netherlands, representing Team Varying Everyday, Liar 2!

From Lincolnshire in England, representing Team ???, Gehenna!

The fight gets underway quickly as both robots jet out of their starting squares at high speed, each hoping that their front wedge will breach the other. On this occasion it€™s the narrower front of Liar 2 that gains the advantage, pushing in underneath the front of Gehenna and quickly firing it€™s gargantuan flipper, throwing Andy€™s robot up into the air, where it travels a few metres back before crashing down onto it€™s wheels.

However Andy doesn€™t waste any time and quickly drives back on another onslaught, getting under the still-fired flipper of Liar 2 and pushing Martijn€™s machine back across the arena and into the wall, firing it€™s own flipper and slamming Liar 2 into the wall. Gehenna retreats and then pushes back underneath as Liar 2 falls back down, so that Andy is back underneath again and this time uses the flipper to push Liar 2 over sideways!

Martijn uses this opportunity to swing Liar 2 around, smashing the side spike into the side of Gehenna, but not causing any damage. It knocks Gehenna side on to Liar though and Martijn doesn€™t waste the opportunity, driving in underneath Andy€™s robot and once again firing that massive WBC-style flipper to throw Gehenna up into the air, this time backwards over Liar 2!

Gehenna somersaults over in the air and crashes back down onto the arena floor backwards, the horizontal spinning blade slamming against the steel floor in a smattering of sparks before it bounces back over onto its wheels! Andy drives back on the attack almost immediately, but Gehenna€™s spinning blade seems to have stopped! Perhaps a chain slipped or a connection was severed when Gehenna€™s blade slammed down onto the arena floor? It would certainly seem so, but this doesn€™t seem to bother Andy as he rams in underneath Liar 2 with his wedge shaped machine and drives Team Varying Everday€™s entry back across the arena into the spike strip!

It€™s a great attack and one that makes the crowd roar and cheer, bringing Gehenna back on top in this bout. It also has given Andy another window to attack, as he pushes in underneath Liar and fires Gehenna€™s own flipper, again pushing Liar against the arena wall, but doing little else. The problem is that Gehenna€™s front hinged flipper can only push Liar against the wall when they€™re this close to it and even when they€™re not it can only flip Liar over, not deliver sky high launches like it€™s adversary. Undeterred, Gehenna pushes Liar 2 across the arena towards the pit release button, but Liar 2 is a slippery customer and squirms off it€™s opponent€™s wedge, turning to try and get it€™s own flipper under the stationary blade of Gehenna, but Andy thinks fast and reverses back over Liar, almost getting over the back and avoiding an attack completely, but Martijn hits the button just in time and Gehenna is tipped over onto its back!

Andy swiftly self-rights, but Liar swings it€™s large body around in a full 360 degree spin, aiming to hit Gehenna with it€™s side spikes while it€™s own primary weapon resets. However, Gehenna is in both mid-air and mid-self-right when Liar comes around, and due to the raised flipper Andy€™s machine is knocked clean out of the air, bouncing on the front of its wedge before coming to rest on its wheels. Liar turns to get another attack in, weapon now reset, but Andy is already aiming for another onslaught, driving full speed towards Liar 2 and once again the two wedges meet!

On this occasion it€™s Gehenna that breaches Liar€™s wedge and forces the other robot back across the arena, firing the flipper to topple Liar 2 yet again, but Andy doesn€™t let up on the assault and gets under Liar 2 again when it€™s inverted, continuing to push the upside down adversary across the Annihilation Stadium while it€™s flipper resets. They eventually collide with the arena wall as Gehenna€™s flipper resets again, driving underneath it€™s worthy adversary and firing the flipper to push it against the arena wall one final time before the buzzer sounds to signal the end of the match!

    CEASE!

What a final! This one will have to go the judges.

    Judges Decision:

    Damage:
    Liar 2 ~ 4.4 x 1 = 4.4
    Gehenna ~ 2.3 x 1 = 2.3

    Aggression:
    Liar 2 ~ 3.1 x 0.75 = 2.325
    Gehenna ~ 4.7 x 0.75 = 3.525

    Control:
    Liar 2 ~ 2.4 x 0.5 = 1.2
    Gehenna ~ 3.9 x 0.5 = 1.95

    Dominance:
    Liar 2 ~ 2.6 x 0.25 = 0.65
    Gehenna ~ 4.1 x 0.25 = 1.025

    Overall:
    Liar 2 ~ 4.4 + 2.325 + 1.2 + 0.65 = 8.575
    Gehenna ~ 2.3 + 3.525 + 1.95 + 1.025 = 8.8

A very close decision, with just 0.225 points separating the two machines! However, the winner of this second annihilator is Andy Jackson with Gehenna! They join Nidhogg Cubed in the final, but who else will join them?

Next Time ~ the return of the #6 ranked former champion, Sheer Heart Attack 2 and previous bronze medallist Spin Dash Unleashed! Also making an appearance is Season 1.0 semi-finalist Leprosy Infection. But who will make their mark in this star-studded annihilator?

    Battle Board
Sheer Heart Attack 2 [#6] vs. Jinx vs. Bandwagon 2 vs. CrOoKeD EvO vs. Spin Dash Unleashed vs. Leprosy Infection

  3. #73
Jinx's tactics - flipper attachment off, avoid drums, attack CrOoKeD eVo (since Bandwagon's out :P), and Spin Dash if he's been flipped. If ever I get a chance, though, grapple anybody within reach, with the axe, and pit them immediately.

Don't worry, Lewis, the battles are great.

  4. #74
heh, sorry for not posting more but since I was technically eliminated I didn't think there was much I could post :P I do read all the battles though, and I've just read that one and it was rather fantastic, so no worries there. Very well done to Andy for winning and commiserations to Marti for losing

My predictions: Bandwagon is out already, presumably due to a tragic shipping error resulting in a ceramic toilet being delivered to the pits instead of Bandwagon (the toilet, of course, being far more aesthetically pleasing, having many more uses, and being considerably more effective in a typical combat scenario than either Mark or his Bandwagon, but as it has no power light it must be disqualified), and I think Sheer Heart Attack 2 might actually have more problems in this annihilator than people think due to the excess of spinning weapons. It'll make it through the first round though, so I'll sadly predict CrOoKeD EvO to fall first.

  5. #75
GEEZUS :-O. It's been a while since Iv even THOUGHT about crooked, so tactics will be a bit difficult, flip everything I can get too, then run for the hills, use marks toilet as a diversion if necessary, and genraly just keep away from danger :-P. Yeah that's all I have on that :/

  6. #76
    Oh blimey, tactics!

I've not read their stats in ages but Leprosy and Sheer Heart Attack have the biggest ground clearances of the other bots IIRC. If I'm right, focus my attacks on those two, aim for the sides and shred the wheels/tracks till one dies. If not, aim for whoever does have the highest GC and shred away. Spin Dash is a spiffy pusher too, so try and make use of the arena hazards too.

Really liking these clashes so far, Lewis. Looking forward to the next ones.

    Annihilator 3
Sheer Heart Attack 2 [#6] vs. Jinx vs. Bandwagon 2 vs. CrOoKeD EvO vs. Spin Dash Unleashed vs. Leprosy Infection

From Enschede in the Netherlands, representing Team Varying Everyday, ranked #6, Sheer Heart Attack 2!
This innovative tracked machine is no stranger to Mechanical Maelstrom, having previously competed in both main seasons of the competition. Not only that, but this machine has experienced serious success on both occasions, mutilating MeCannibal 3.0, Spin Dash Unleashed and Gabriel III to become champion of Season 1.0. In Season 2.0 it began strongly, storming through both the eliminator and round 2 match against promising hammerbot Supreme to reach the quarter-finals, where it was defeated by the eventual runner-up Holepunch 2.0. Returning unchanged, can this former champion make it€™s mark in Annihilation or has the grass grown beneath it€™s, err... tracks?

From Etobicoke in Canada, representing Team Zlayerz, Jinx!
In serious contrast to Sheer Heart Attack 2 this machine is a complete newcomer to Mechanical Maelstrom, but on no terms should you underestimate it. It€™s packing a seriously powerful pneumatic axe that has an optional flipper attachment, though that€™s been removed for this match. This pink bot is well controlled and well armoured, as it€™s coated in 7mm titanium/vanadium alloy with an extra 8mm protecting the front, so good luck trying to penetrate that! She€™s also packing one hell of a theme tune, but Benjamin Burnley can€™t help her in the arena, and neither will her low height. At just 15cm high, Jinx€™s axe could have a hard time hitting some of the taller bots on the noggin.

From Richmond Upon Thames, representing Team Orr, CrOoKeD EvO!
Another newcomer to the competition is CrOoKeD EvO, who€™s name is a real bitch to keep typing! :P Whatever, you know who I mean if I just say Crooked! Anyhow, like Jinx this newbie is nothing to sniff at. This bad boy is packing a full pressure pneumatic flipper, hinged at the rear of the robot and certainly well capable of tossing robots clean out of the arena! Good luck getting through it as well, the flipper arm is made of 6mm hardox and the wedge it rests on is 8mm of the same stuff! The rest of the armour is pretty tough too, but the most powerful of our spinners are capable of getting through 6mm titanium after a few shots. The rounded rear of the robot should help it to self-right quickly and easily, and the magmotors in the drive should provide decent power, but the outdated SLA batteries powering them are no help. Also the high top speed of 25mph coupled with the fact this bot is only 2WD isn€™t going to help it€™s controllability in the arena.

From Glasgow in Scotland, representing Team Braveheart, Spin Dash Unleashed!
Screw the new bots! It€™s this old hand you want to watch out for in the arena. Spin Dash has competed in both previous seasons of Mechanical Maelstrom, clinching the bronze medal in Season 1.0 having fallen to Sheer Heart Attack 2 in the semi-final, but winning the play-off against Leprosy Infection afterward. However, it all went a bit pants in Season 2.0 when Steven found himself faced with the deadly power of Autism 3.0 and Back to Rock III in the first round eliminator. Still, SDU returns unchanged for another stab at a Mechanical Maelstrom title, with the deadly saw and ramming ability intact. However, it€™s manouevrability isn€™t the best and the saw blade is less effective upside down, meaning we could see Spin Dash on the leash if it gets flipped.

From Onehouse in Suffolk, representing Team Dinowarrior, Leprosy Infection!
And so the final bot to enter the arena for this annihilator is another veteran machine, coming fresh from it€™s first round defeat in Mechanical Maelstrom 2.0 at the hands of newcomers Visioned and Dantu, although Dantu was in fact the eventual champion. Stripped of it€™s ranking and placed in an annihilator with the bot that beat it out of 3rd place in Season 1.0, Leprosy Infection is back and ready for revenge. The front vertical spinning drum is designed to flake opponent€™s armour off, but is slow and steady damage a good idea in an annihilator? We€™ll soon see.

And they€™re off! The newcomers are the ones that are straight off the mark, which is surprising given the history that€™s brooding between the three returning competitors in this bout. As a quick reminder, Sheer Heart Attack 2 defeated Spin Dash Unleashed in the semi-final of Season 1.0. Spin Dash then went into the play-off against Leprosy Infection, which it won. However, not content with that victory SDU makes a beeline for Leprosy Infection, driving the saw blade into the side mini-skirt (teehee) of Chris€™ machine and slamming it into the spike strip, the saw blade scraping away at the titanium armour all the while.

Meanwhile, Jinx has launched an attack on Crooked, ramming straight at Team Orr€™s entry and getting under the front wedge with those long front spikes, pushing Jack back into onto the killsaws! BZZT! There€™s a smattering of sparks on the titanium underside of Crooked€™s body shell and it€™s spun around, away from Jinx, giving it the perfect opportunity to go on the attack and it does so, driving under the side of Kody€™s machine and firing the flipper to topple it€™s fellow newcomer! However, Jinx is quick to self-right and turns around, using the rear hinged spikes to push underneath Crooked while the flipper is up and drive Jack backwards across the arena into the spike strip! No damage caused, but points for aggression scored for Jinx should this go to a judges decision.

On the other side of the arena Sheer Heart Attack 2 is moving in for an attack against SDU, who is still holding Leprosy Infection against the spike strip. Martijn catches Steven unawares and flips Spin Dash up and over with a smack of the drum, away from Leprosy Infection, who gratefully reverses away from the spike strip and to safety, but one of the skirts is trailing and it looks like it was gnawed away by the saw of SDU. This is dragging on the floor and making fluid movement a bit more difficult for Leprosy Infection, but all the same the drum is spinning and Chris moves in for a revenge attack on Spin Dash Unleashed, who€™s just getting away from the arena wall. His drum makes contact with the side of Steven€™s machine and bumps it up into the air slightly, allowing Chris to push in underneath and turn it slowly back over! There are scrapes all over one side of SDU from the onslaught now and also the other side panel is buckled slightly from Sheer Heart Attack 2€™s onslaught earlier on, making Team Braveheart look worringly damaged already.

While this is going on Crooked has managed to turn the tide on Jinx slightly and by turning gently has eased away from the spike strip to go back on the attack, but again finds itself foiled by the long front spikes of Kody€™s machine. There really isn€™t much Jinx can to do to Crooked though has even though Kody drives in underneath Crooked has Jack turns, putting them side on to each other Crooked€™s 55cm high frame makes it difficult for Jinx€™s axe to get into play. Kody swings it furiously, but Jinx is too far underneath and the arm of the axe simply slams into the side of Crooked, doing no damage. To try and get an attack in with the axe Kody reverses out, but Jack sees his chance and drives off the spikes of Jinx, turning to get under the side of Jinx and Crooked pushes the pink machine across the arena before firing the flipper to topple it again! Once more though Kody swiftly self-rights and goes back on the attack, driving under the raised flipper of Crooked while Jinx€™s axe resets and pushing Jack back across the arena again.

Meanwhile Spin Dash Unleashed has switched targets and is driving on the attack of Sheer Heart Attack 2, pushing under the side of the former champion and slicing away at the part of the tracks that is visible from behind the armour with the vigorous saw blade. However, the tracks have good grip on the floor and Steven is finding it difficult to push Martijn across the arena. He is moving, but certainly a lot slower than Team Braveheart would like. Seeing an opening to attack SDU again Leprosy Infection spins up it€™s drum and goes on the attack, slamming into the side of Steven€™s machine he previously attacked and the vertical weaponry begins to gnaw away at the amour again, eating up the paintwork but not making a lot of headway into the hardox armour itself. Sure there are dents and scratches, but the internals of the Scottish machine are safe for now.

Jinx€™s axe has now reset, along with Crooked€™s flipper, and Kody finally has the opportunity to give Jack€™s machine a good session with his axe. He lets rip and the axe slams down onto the front wedge of Crooked, but the thick hardox holds up well. Clearly frustrated by the difficulty he€™s having in damaging Crooked, Kody keeps up the axe fixed down on Crooked and drives it backwards across the arena, slamming it into the pit release button and retracting the axe, driving further underneath Crooked, causing it to drive up Jinx before falling off sideways! The height of the robot may have prevented Kody getting an attack in earlier on, but it also makes the machine less stable than it would be and Jack is dismayed as Crooked teeters precariously on its edge before falling onto its back. He hits the flipper button to self-right, but succeeds only in stacking himself against the arena side wall just next to the pit release button and thus leaving himself wide open to attack from Jinx, who lines up with the axe and swings it over, putting a massive dent in the titanium lid of Crooked!

On the other side of the arena Sheer Heart Attack has the drum back up to speed and has made it away from SDU, but with a slight limp in the one track where Steven has chewed into it with that infernal saw blade of his. Seeing an opportunity to attack the vulnerable Crooked, Martijn goes across the arena as quickly as he can and tackles the rear of Crooked with his spinning drum, knocking it up into the air and off the wall, but back down onto its wheels in the arena! Crooked is quick to drive away, but it seems to be having trouble as it just moves in a big circle, it€™s rear end slamming into the side of Jinx! It would appear that either the attack by Jinx€™s axe or SHA2€™s drum has severed a connection between the motor and wheel of Crooked, or perhaps damaged the motor itself, because it€™s going nowhere fast!

Meanwhile Spin Dash has gone back on the attack of Leprosy Infection and has slammed into the side of the robot that has that mangled side skirt. The collision is brutal as SDU€™s blade is back up to speed, and so the skirt flies off completely as Steven begins to ram the Team Dinowarrior entry across the arena in the direction of the open pit! However, as Steven and Chris speed across the arena Crooked is put under attack from SHA2, who lurches forward and clips the front wedge of Jack€™s machine with it€™s drum, causing the Team Orr driver to panic and fire the flipper as well as quickly reversing to escape from more damage, but with the damaged drive reversing isn€™t so simple and Crooked turns sideways into the path of SDU pushing Leprosy Infection towards the pit!

It€™s a three bot pile-up as SDU€™s 18HP drive manages to shift all 199kg of Crooked and Leprosy Infection into the pit of oblivion, but Steven can€™t stop in time and Spin Dash takes the plunge too!

    CEASE!

Three of the five competing robots in the pit, but Crooked was at the forefront of the bot anarchy and was thus the first robot into the pit. Therefore CrOokEd EvO is eliminated and the remaining four machines advance to the third round of this annihilator!

A very w00ty fight there Lewis

I think one of the drumbots will probably go at this stage, I'll go with Leprosy Infection to fall.

  9. #79
Awesome stuff, Lewis, undignified ending and all.

Same tactics as before. Let's see how hard I can push those tracks and skirts.

  10. #80
you need me to post more, I just lost a fight with Liar 2! that doesnt get me in the mood!

okay, enough of that, your fights are great and I do enjoy to see you back at this Lewis, very much so, and why cry over Liar 2? I have Sheer Heart Attack 2 to defend my honour!

Hit stuff with the drum, that is what I will be doing. Use my tank style skid steering to face whoever threatens me with my drum. My drum likes wedges and/or slopes, nobody really wants to wedge me where my drum is, whoever does so will only damage himself and the impact will make sure I'm not really gonna get pushed or anything. Likewise, my drum likes flat sides, and it likes knocking opponents over, or damaging them.

    yeah!
