Actually Jamie the way we size pipes for a plumbing system in real life is to put the calculations into Hevacomp (or god forbid do them by hand). Get accurately calculated sizes (normally around 32-40mm) and then decide its 22mm pipe anyway because we always do that and its always ok!!
It also makes me laugh about how I tend to stereotype people who have different grades.
A 3rd, 2/2 or a 2/1 is ok for someone id employ to do proper work. People who I want to send out to meetings with clients and stuff. 1sts and phds i generally consider for the more geeky side of the business (computational fluid dynamics and environmental assessments etc.). Not saying anything by that but its perception.
I also think there is a gap in where a degree is important. Its important when youre going for a graduate position (obviously) and its important at the other end.
For example our practice is registered with CIBSE (The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers) and if no-ones a member of cibse or a chartered engineer we dont get it. Thus all the directors and associate directors need to have it or at least be very close to it.
That said I employ quite a few ex electricians who do very well. They have an education you cant teach graduates. They know how stuff goes together which is refreshing.
In saying that theres so few people in the industry, if someones got half a brain cell wed normally take them on.

Just stumbled in here and decided to post for the first time.
A very interesting discussion certainly and one which I have been turning over in my head for a while. Granted that I generally wonder if I right going to uni the night before an exam rather than when I have had a few too many and am dancing in a comical manner in the union.
Not having properly entered the (real) job market (I took a year out working for Rolls Royce and worked a summer for them a year later) I can only base my comments on what I have observed.
I would agree already with your comments Andy. I look around at the people on my course and can see clearly those who would be brilliant at throwing something into CFD and obtaining the optimum properties for a component but would be absolutely useless at selling something to someone.
I am aiming for the centre line, get the degree with all the fancy trimmings but also get as much practical experience in various different areas as possible.
If you are not sure about going to uni then I suggest you look into a program such as year in industry (http://www.yini.org.uk/http://www.yini.org.uk/). I got setup in my year out working for RR with them. Earnt a nice wage of 11k and got some real world experience which has proven invaluable in my studies so far. Through it I discovered that I hate office work and being trapped at a desk for 8 hours a day. Better to learn it sooner rather than 15 years down the line doing something I hate.
Some other advice I got from the guys I worked with,
-dont ever have kids
-dont ever get a morgage
-dont ever get a wife
-get a car but make sure you can afford to run it properly
Two was going about it, if you can get the work and degree at same time - do it... rather than get the qualification then try get work after.
I like what Andy said about what grade you get at uni. Though if someone got a 3rd hons degree, then they relaly did not give a damn and just got drunk every night ended up re sitting every exam and did bare min and if i was in charge of a company, i wouldnt employ them, Uni wasnt that hard!!!
Though if someone has a 1st, then yeah id be like hmmm are they a geek and no social life or what?
To the point im very much on track for a 2:1 degree, though if i pull my fingure out and work on this one last assignment and get a B instead instead of average C, i could get a 1st Hons degree. But dont know if i want a 1st coz i dont want to be brnaded as a geek, when im not, its only coz my dissy was so ace coz i linked it to something i enjoied doing - the Roaming Robots site and scored an A in it which is worth 2/5ths of my degree for reasons i cant be assed to go into details for.
But yeah its all swings and rounderbouts.
But yeah - at least go to Uni, its harder to get into Uni life after you have worked than it is to go into Uni right from A Levels/College!!

some very successful people have 3rds. If you can go to the pub, party 24 hours a day and then still do enough to at least pass something. Also on the subject of whether someone gives a damn, why should they? were talking about 18-22year olds here and theres more than enough time to take things seriously later on. It also takes a lot of effort and character to get a third. I;d find it soul destrying having to resit everything and it does show quite a bit of character.
After saying what I said I just realised that I .....erm.........ho hum........got a first!! Whats worse is I got it part time!!
I normally make the excuse that you can do that with 3 and a half years in the pub and six months hard work.

Yea, unfortunately, they are only toy planes but still, pretty good going for a 16 yr old!
