Damn, that's crap
Barely looks like solid steel at the point where's it's broken; looks more like some sort of cheap composite. Hope it didn't rob you of too much cash.
But before that happened it was looking strong. May only weigh 2kg but with the power behind it, that's enough. Best of luck getting a new one sorted.
PJ- Yeah solid material... pretty lame how it sheered like that.
Clive- you'll get your chance to get beaten like everyone else lol![]()
Jamie... yeah seemed ok... ill be speeding it up to 11000RPM instead of 7800rpm i think for version 2.... also think ill make the teeth slightly more serated for a better bite... just doing the cad now![]()
looks like a shear that you would expect from a stress concentration on a very hard metal. The metal is probably the grade of tool steel you were after. Had their been a larger radius to the shaft it may not have broken although it's a good demonstration as to why the hardest material isn't always the best.
not a lot of load for 17mm tool steel... also its hard to machine a radius when your turnin a square bar round.
As we were saying it's pretty certain it's not a nice new peice of D2 that dave got sent as it should have been.
It almost looks very work hardened as if its a cheap tool steel thats been cut off the end of a used press tool or something thats done a few hundred thousand cycles lol. D2 is an excellent material - that beater isnt.
Maybe we're looking at this the wrong way, and actually PloughBots steel shell is just super awesome!
Dennis has done his bit on the gearbox's... hopefully ill have them in the next day or two, then i can make new output shafts for the main drive, and get them mounted in the robot... then it wont be as borring as it was at kidderminster.
