AUTOISM 3.0 Vs EYE OF RAN II Vs ORKA R.V. Vs SKULLCRUSHER

Although a newcomer to the PTT, Autoism is hoping to be an automatic hit with the readers and based on its stats, I don't think that will be a problem. This malevolent machine is modelled closely on former Roaming Robots champion Big Nipper - an invertible skirted box with a large pair of horizontal pincers, designed to both crush and lift. The pincers are powered by an LEM-130 running at 36v and a Vivoil pump with two hydraulic rams at 3000psi. This puts up to five tonnes of pressure at their tips, not to mention the numerous talons built into the claws for extra pain. Throw in a 4mm Aluminium Boron Carbide shell, a 4mm Hardox exoskeleton, 12hp from its two S28-400 Magmotors and top speeds of 15mph and this newbie appears to have it all. Unfortunately, the invertible frame leaves the four go-kart wheels open to overhead attacks and a good powerful flip from underneath the claws could send Autoism back to the autoshop.

FROM PONTEFRACT, IN YORKSHIRE, EYE OF RAN II!

Making its first appearance here in the PTT, Eye of Ran II has its sights set on victory at any cost. It's an unusual T-shaped machine with a wide front and its main weapon mounted on the bottom - a terrifying, meter-long Hardox spinning blade! This 30kg bar of doom is powered by a modified Stihl MS880 121cc chainsaw petrol engine (catchy) and is able to reach speeds of 2500rpm and produce just over 90kj of energy. Just watch where you aim those hooked claws, Joey - you'll have someone's eye out! Eye of Ran is a sturdy beast, with a titanium/vanadium chassis and a mixture of polycarbonate and Hardox armouring, and its invertible frame makes it invulnerable to flippers. Its two wheels are left open to axes and crushers however and although it's a decent pusher, I wonder how much control Joey will be able to maintain with that unusual shape. Will Eye of Ran see the light in more ways than one?

FROM ONEHOUSE, IN SUFFOLK, ORKA R.V.!

Having made quite a splash in the last war, Orka has returned to our waters for another try at the title. This latest version - Orka R.V. - is significantly different from its predecessor. Where once it heavily resembled Behemoth, this new incarnation is more akin to the Matador - an invertible box-wedge with a long, CO2-powered flipping arm. The arm can throw nearly 400kg at last count and can last for approximately fifty flips before tiring (More than enough, surely!). The Orka is a thick-skinned beast with 7mm titanium armour and its six wheels powered by S28-400 Magmotors at 24v give it more punch than a hammerhead shark! Better yet, its invertible frame means it doesn't have to waste precious CO2 self-righting if inverted. The wedge and flipper would be rendered useless, however, and a well-aimed harpoon from above could easily puncture those tyres. Will Orka sink or swim?

FROM JERSEY, SKULLCRUSHER!

Named for the biggest forger in London town (according to Bottom, at least), Skullcrusher is hoping it won't come out 'bottom' of the heap as it makes its PTT debut. This newcomer is an invertible cylinder with a pair of vertically-mounted crushing jaws, very similar to the ones sported by Sergeant Bash. Don't blame me if you get courtmarshalled, Elliot! These jaws are powered by hydraulics running at 1000psi - more than enough to break a few bonces, I'd say. If the jaws should be broken, Skullcrusher can also use its two 750-watt Bosch motors and rear spikes to shove its opponents to their doom. It's manoueverable and steady with tops speeds of 9mph, but it lacks the punch of other rammers with only two wheels and the 2mm steel armour will be an open buffet for today's supercharged spinners. Regardless, hold onto your heads, ladies and gents - it's skull-crushing time!

ACTIVATE!

Orka R.V. immediately dives into the action, plowing into Autoism in the middle of the arena! Paul tries to get a grip on the veteran, but the slippery Orka simply flips his machine out of the way! Autoism tumbles away to one side as Eye of Ran and Skullcrusher join the fray! Eye of Ran's horrible blade is already whirring menacingly and Elliot doesn't feel ready to tackle Joey's juggernaut just yet! With some fancy manouevering Skullcrusher deftly avoids an assault from Eye of Ran and gives the T-shaped newbie a jab with its rear spikes! Eye of Ran quickly spins round to exact vengeance but winds up with a face full of Autoism instead! Joey frowns - his blade has been halted by the collision and his opponent is still very much alive, although his skirts look a little battered! Autoism makes its move, trying to slip its lifting claws underneath Eye of Ran! Joey tries to wriggle away, but the more powerful Autoism has changed tac, now attempting to pin his rival down with the claws! Paul piles on the pressure, slowly edging Eye of Ran towards the western wall! Joey continues to fight back however and with one sharp jerk Eye of Ran is at last given some breathing space again! The newcomer instantly heads for the other side of the ring, its enormous spinning blade getting back up to speed! Autoism follows in hot pursuit and quickly catches up! Eye of Ran swiftly dodges the oncoming charge, swinging around to strike Autoism's right side...
CRRRASH!
The Big Nipper-esque newcomer reels as the right-hand skirting is crumpled from the blow! Paul turns to strike back but Eye of Ran is away to rev up the blade once again! Claws poised for action, Autoism gives chase once more!
Meanwhile, Orka and Skullcrusher have been engaged in a rather one-sided conflict! No sooner does Skullcrusher approach to take a bite out of the whale than it is immediately thrown away by Chris' flippin' huge flipper! Skullcrusher comes down to earth with a CRASH, but is little more than slightly shaken! Elliot immediately moves to take revenge, slipping the jaws underneath Orka's 8mm ground clearance! Before Chris can realise it Skullcrusher clamps onto the whale's side and attempts to drag it to the nearest House Robot! Orka puts up a great fight and begins to take control, its six wheels outmatching Skullcrusher's two! With a burst of speed Orka drags the newcomer to the top of the arena where the duo continue their tussle...right in front of Mr Hyde's CPZ! Skullcrusher fights hard but one jerk from Orka sends the cylindrical crusher straight into the arms of the House Robot! Down comes Mr Hyde's hammer like the fist of an iron giant! And again! And again! And again! It appears that Skullcrusher's 2 mil steel skull is beginning to cave in! Elliot's even managed to let Orka slip out of his clutches - if only he could do the same with Mr Hyde! It's only after a couple more blows to the bonce that Skullcrusher manages to evade Mr Hyde's grasp and right now, the newcomer's starting to look rather woozy! Orka attempts to knock some sense into its rival, sliding underneath and launching it into the air! Skullcrusher lands near the arena centre, just in time to see Eye of Ran scuttle by with Autoism hot on its heels! Bravely (or foolishly) Elliot decides to join in and rams Autoism off-course! Paul's machine turns round, trying to grab Skullcrusher before it can be grabbed itself! Their skuffle allows Eye of Ran to quietly sneak up with its blade approaching full speed...
CRRRASH!
Sparks shower the warzone as both robots are flung away! Autoism's crumpled skirt appears to have been mutilated altogether, but at least the Big Nipper lookalike is still mobile! Skullcrusher, on the other hand, is now barely moving at all! One wheel is still active, but the other appears to have been shocked into stillness by Eye of Ran's onslaught! Elliot is determined to keep going, however, keeping his brave bot trundling in circles until the Grim Beeper arrives to deliver the last rights...
1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9...10!
And as Dulcy stomps over to clean up the mess (ie kill it with fire), we now have three robots left! Autoism and Eye of Ran are scrapping near the bottom of the ring when Orka swims into view! The PTT veteran breaks the newcomers apart, encouraging Eye of Ran to back off and rev up the spinning blade again! Orka is about to follow when Autoism attacks from the side and knocks the whale for six! Paul attempts to bring the lifting claws into play, but Orka is proving as slippery as ever, backing away and bumping into Eye of Ran! The blade snaps to a stop, giving Orka a nice big scar for its troubles! Autoism joins in and in seconds all three are brawling together at the far side of the arena! Orka manages to scrape under Eye of Ran's side and toss it aside before turning its attention back to Autoism! Paul tries once again to grab hold of Orka, but the more experienced machine meets his challenge head-on - literally! Chris charges underneath Autoism's front and begins pushing the newcomer towards the western wall! Paul's machine pushes back hard, but the killer whale is just proving to be the stronger of the two! The veteran jerks forwards, the flipper fires...and the newcomer is sent somersaulting over the barrier and out of the contest! Orka backs off and spins in celebration with Eye of Ran, just as the Launchpad sends Skullcrusher flying overhead!

Skullcrusher needs its head examined, and I doubt Autoism won't be very auto-mobile for a while.

BLOODY FRIGID Vs DISCO 5 Vs HACKED-OFF HAKA Vs INTRIGUOUS

Bloody hell, it's Bloody Frigid! Taking several leaves out of Razer's book, this newcomer is a low wedge armed with a large titanium crushing beak. This cruel crusher runs off a Vivoil pump and is powered by an S28-400 Magmotor, producing 7.5 tonnes of pressure at its tip and 15 tonnes right at the back! Get caught in the clamp and there will be blood all right! The robot is powered by two LEM-130 running at 46.2v, providing excellent speed and manoueverability, and its 8mm titanium monocoque armour is sure to take plenty of punishment with ease. Throw in a pair of cable-operated 'wings' for efficient self-righter and we've got a winner right here, right? Well, maybe. The two go-kart wheels may lack the traction and push of beefier robots and crushing weapons aren't exactly reknowned for their speed. Is Bloody Frigid set for bloody victory or the newbie freeze up at the chance?

Burn, baby, burn! Back to strut its funky stuff for a fourth time, Disco 5 remains relatively unchanged since its last PTT outing. It's still the same low blue skirted wedge we know and fear with its trademark weapon synergy. Most notable is the titular disc, a vertical flywheel on the rear powered by a C40-500 Magmotor. Running at 36v with a 2:1 twin tension cog belt reduction (Whatever that is), the disc can reach speeds of 3000rpm and produce up to 32kJ of force! Talk about tearing up the dancefloor! And let's not forget the forward-hinged 145psi pneumatic flipper on the front, able to flip even the dumpiest dancer. Disco 5 is protected by a 4mm titanium monocoque shell and its four Vulcalon wheels are given plenty of push by two S28-400 Magmotors at 36v. All that said, however, its ultra-low ground clearance could make manouevering tricky and if the flipper's supply runs out, Disco could end up as dead as its namesake.

FROM DADFORD, HACKED-OFF HAKA!

Understandably hacked off after its early exit in the last war, Hacked-Off Haka is back for a fourth stab at the title. An invertible box with a pair of wedges, Haka's main weapon is hard to miss - an 11.5kg nitrogen hammer running at 1000psi. The hammer is double-headed, with a Terrorhurtz-style axe blade and a katana blade ala Mortis, and can strike with up to four tonnes of pounding power at the start of each fight. That means that this brutal bludgeoner can cut 8 mil titanium with just a couple of blows! Haka itself is made from 5mm aluminium boron carbide and will prove tricky to trap with top speeds of 13mph. Its four aluminium wheels do lack a bit in the pushing department, however, and the axe can only fire so many times per fight before the nitrogen runs out. If it does, I get the feeling Haka will be even more hacked-off than usual!

Eye of the Robot 4 grand champion, winner of the Best Axe trophy at last year's Vapourbot Awards - this is an intriguing newcomer and no mistake. Intriguous is a crafty customer with a long, low profile, a green and black motif, and a pneumatic axe ready to knock you six ways from Sunday! Using a system similar to Battlebots superheavyweight The Judge, the axe operates via a huge 225mm stroke/200mm bore ram and two custom-built CO2 tanks weighing 2.5kg. This provides power for 15 full-pressure shots, able to leave a dent in even the thickest armour! Intriguous is a tough cookie itself with 4mm Hardox monocoque armour and skirts and scoops for added protection. It's a capable rammer to boot with two LEM-130 Lynch motors providing high acceleration and top speeds of 12mph. It's invertible too, but this leaves its four wheels open to fellow axes and it'll be intriguing to see how Kody will cope once the axe runs out of juice...

And so our final Heavyweight melee gets underway! All four robots are off to a flying start, colliding in the middle of the warzone with a terrible din! Hacked-Off Haka gets the first blow in, striking Disco 5's wedge with its battleaxe blade! Straight away the 4mm titanium casing has been dinged, the paintwork has received a nasty scratch - and Martyn isn't happy! Disco backs out of the brawl and charges straight for Haka, knocking the fellow veteran out of the way! This gives Bloody Frigid a clear shot at Intriguous, a shot Tracy eagerly takes! The Razer-like machine rams the fellow Canadian and tries to get around and under the sides! Kody fires the axe as he attempts to block and - OUCH! 8 mil titanium protects Bloody Frigid and Intriguous still manages to dint the armour! The axe strikes again, this time only clipping Bloody Frigid as it sneaks under Intriguous' side! Kody tries to get away, but Tracy's crushing claw now has his machine at her mercy! The beak grips the Hardox shell tightly as Bloody Frigid turns and trundles up the arena, heading straight for the Void Activation Button! Intriguous' wheels are still spinning furiously in an attempt to escape! It's lucky for Kody that Tracy hasn't gotten her claw on them yet! Regardless he's in trouble as the two newcomers hit the Button with a bump, sounding that all-too familiar siren across the battlefield! Bloody Frigid is just about to drag Intriguous out of the corner when Disco and Haka arrive on the scene! The fight between the two veterans has been relatively uneventful thus far - save for a glancing blow by Haka's hammer, most of their scuffle has consisted of ramming and twirling! This quickly changes when the duo decide to show the Canadian whippersnappers how a PTT battle should be fought! Disco charges into Bloody Frigid's rear, easily scraping under the 8mm ground clearance! The flipper fires and nearly topples the crusher over, Intriguous ironically saving it from capsizing! Haka tries to get a blow in too, but Disco is on a roll, finally bringing its titular disc into play!
CRRRASH!
The blow causes Haka to hop right off the ground, its ABC armour now sporting a nasty couple of scars! Matty immediately goes for vengeance, ramming Disco before it can get the disc going again! Down comes the battleaxe, denting the titanium once more! This leads the veterans into a little tug-of-war contest as Bloody Frigid finally escapes the corner! All the confusion, combined with the attack by Disco, has allowed Intriguous to slip free of Tracy's grasp! The low axebot quickly returns to the arean centre, Bloody Frigid and the veterans hot on its heels!
Once again we find our competitors in one big brawl! With the axes of Haka and Intriguous flailing to and fro, it's difficult to make out exactly who's actually getting the upper hand! The axe bots certainly seem the most active of the four at least! Bloody Frigid is having little luck getting far enough under any of its opponents, while Disco is trying to get some space to turn and bring the disc into play! The scuffle continues until Haka lands a blow on Bloody Frigid's claw and attempts to drag it down the arena! Intriguous is just about to come in with a good hard shunt when Disco reverses into the fray, flywheel a blur...
CRRRASH!
Both Bloody Frigid and Haka are knocked aside from the impact! Haka appears to have come off the worst, another long scratch added to the ABC armour, although Bloody Frigid doesn't look much better with several clear dents in the titanium shell! Disco and Intriguous charge together, each going after their respective targets! Haka lands another glancing blow on Disco, just as Martyn's machine barely scrapes under its 3mm ground clearance! The blue wedge puts on a burst of speed and sends Haka crashing into the eastern wall, axe flying in rage! As the hammerbot wriggles free to exact revenge, Bloody Frigid and Intriguous find themselves in a familiar tango! Tracy tries to grab hold of Intriguous a second time and nearly succeeds, the crushing claw scraping its Hardox armour before it escapes with a sharp turn! Bloody Frigid spins to catch up, only to end up in the path of the axe once more! The 8 mil titanium receives another bad dent as Intriguous rams its fellow Canadian hard! Retracting the axe Kody continues to hound Bloody Frigid and manages to scrape under the sides! Immediately firing the axe yet again, Intriguous grapples its opponent and pushes the Razer-like machine down the arena towards the Void! Tracy does her best to try and escape Kody's clutches, but it appears to be too late as they reach the lip of the swirling abyss! Intriguous screeches to a halt, the axe retracts and Bloody Frigid tumbles out of sight!
Meanwhile Disco and Haka have been going at each other hammer and tong - well, hammer and disc, actually! Both veterans are flaunting their experience, skillfully dodging their more obvious attacks and dishing out sneaky glancing blows, all at a pretty furious pace! All is relatively equal until now when Haka's hammer narrowly misses Disco! Matty has just retracted the mighty axe when Disco lands another side-on assault on his machine! Scraping under the tiny ground clearance Disco goes full throttle, ramming the older PTT veteran into the eastern wall a second time! Haka's axe swings back and forth as Martyn, now far enough his opponent, fires the flipper! Haka topples onto its side - and immediately pushes itself back onto its wheels! Irritated, Martyn spins Disco around to attack with the flywheel, just as Intriguous joins the party! The Canadian creation charges into Haka and gives the veteran a taste of its own axe as Disco's disc makes its mark...
CRRRASH!
This time Intriguous takes most of the punishment, though Haka appears a little shaken! Finding his machine has held up well to the assault Kody drives Intriguous underneath Haka and pushes the veteran up the arena...right into the scoop of Scarlek! The House Robot's blowtorch glows brightly as it sets to work on Haka! Matty isn't going out with out a fight however and gives Scarlek a hatchet blow for its troubles before scuttling away! Intriguous is just trying to prevent its escape when Disco catches up to them, flywheel-first...
CRRRASH!
The blow from the disc nearly throws Intriguous onto its back! The Hardox appears to have held up, save for the ugly new scars on the green and black paint! Haka dives in as Kody refinds his bearings, narrowly missing Intriguous' wheels with another axe attack! Intriguous quickly pulls away for a charge, just as Disco beats it to the punch! All three robots are once again scrapping in close quarters, the twin axe bot's weapons swinging to and fro! It appears that Disco and Intriguous may be ganging up on Haka; it certainly appears to be receiving the most blows in this latest clash! This soon changes when Disco dives under Intriguous and almost flips it over! Kody lands a glancing blow as it escapes, just before taking a hard knock from Haka! Both robots attack at once, briefly locking axes! Kody and Matty quickly attempt to untangle their machines, just as Disco charges backwards onto the scene...
CRRRASH!
Martyn's hefty flywheel easily knocks the two axe bots free! Haka takes the brunt of this latest attack, with even the axe itself taking some damage, although Intriguous hasn't escaped without a few more cuts and bruises! The disc slowed to a crawl once more, Disco twirls around and charges the axe bots, hoping to get at least one proper flip in as time ticks down!

The three robots collide head-on! Both axe bots get a quick blow on Disco before it starts shoving Intriguous to one side!

Intriguous strikes the veteran's flipper and engages Disco in a brief pushing match! Hurridly Haka gets in on the action and lands one last blow on Disco's lid!

And as Disco's disc knocks Haka aside, our final Heavyweight melee draws to a close! With three robots still mobile and only two spaces left in the next round, it's up to the Judge to decide which robot has got to go. Will Disco die a death once more; will Haka be hacked up; or will Intriguous no longer prove captivating? Over to the scores...

DAMAGE = (5/5) * 3 = 15 (With some truly devestating disc attacks, Disco wins this catagory.)
AGGRESSION = (4/5) * 2.5 = 10 (Tenacious throughout the match, but misses full marks for retreating to rev the flywheel so often.)
STRATEGY = (3/5) * 2 = 6 (Not much, other than 'slice and flip', but it worked for the most part.)
CONTROL = (4/5) * 1.5 = 6 (Smooth and steady, with the disc rarely missing its mark.)
STYLE = (3/5) * 1 = 3 (The twirls and flips were pretty; the bashing and crashing, not so much.)
TOTAL = 40 / 50

HACKED-OFF HAKA
DAMAGE = (4/5) * 3 = 12 (Just about everyone has a few bad dings from Matty's hammer.)
AGGRESSION = (3/5) * 2.5 = 7.5 (Took on all comers, but was the most dominated of the surviving trio.)
STRATEGY = (3/5) * 2 = 6 (Again, little strategy other than 'hit things', but it did it well.)
CONTROL = (4/5) * 1.5 = 4.5 (Good driving and aiming overall.)
STYLE = (3/5) * 1 = 3 (Not the elegant machine, but good manouevering and quick self-righting mean points here.)
TOTAL = 34.5 / 50

INTRIGUOUS
DAMAGE = (4/5) * 3 = 12 (Much like Haka, dished out lumps to just about everyone in its path.)
AGGRESSION = (5/5) * 2.5 = 12.5 (Dogged from start to finish, wins the catagory for defeating Bloody Frigid.)
STRATEGY = (4/5) * 2 = 8 (High points again for successfully beating Tracy and use of House Robots.)
CONTROL = (4/5) * 1.5 = 6 (Both skillful driving and marksmanship throughout.)
STYLE = (3/5) * 1 = 3 (Again like Haka, not a bot designed with 'style' in mind. Still, spins and shunts mean marks here.)
TOTAL = 41.5 / 50

THE JUDGE'S VERDICT: Disco 5 & Intriguous win by and 40 & 41.5 - 34.5.

That was a gripping melee and no mistake, but I'm afraid it's Hacked-Up Haka who's getting the axe today!
