Thread: How could I Improve pt 2

Well you designed them, so you more than anyone should know what they look like :P

Some simple sketches should suffice if you can't get CAD.

As you finalise your ideas, drawing your design in something like isometric after having done various projections can produce something pretty good and easier to edit (an eraser and redraw the part.)

I never try anything in Pro/Desktop (the CAD I use) without having it working firstly in my head and then on paper; if I need maths as well, mathematically and if it's a linkage or mechanism etc, in lego or on incredibots.

In a nutshell, my advice, stick to pencil and paper.

Do not underestimate Cardboard Aided Design either.

And now that I think about it, I need to update some more of my squad...

Return of the Prayer Shawl (Formerly Tallit)
    Weight: 110kg
Shape: A basic unrefined wedge, ala Mastiff.
Colour: White with thin gold and blue stripes.
    Dimensions: 100cm x 80cm x 30cm
Drive: 2 48v LEM-130 motors, powered by 6x NiCad Battlepacks.
    Locomotion: A pair of 90cm x 4cm x 15cm rubber tank tracks.
    Armour: 4mm hardox
    Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at the front, and at sides and back due to 4mm titanium skirts. 8mm without skirts.
    Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: This time, the weapon is a powerful front-hinged flipper, powered by a 140psi 2.5kg Co2 Tank connected to a 50mm bore 110mm stroke ram. The flipper should be able to roll over up to 300kg, and has an average of 25 flips.
    Srimech: The flipper
    Strength: Low and powerful.
Weakness: Can be stranded on its sides, however it can't be stranded on its back because the back panel is very small.
Bio: After the original Tallit had its flaws exposed, I developed this modified variant with a pneumatic weapon, weaker motors, and more flexible armour. It also has had its shuffling feet replaced with tracks.

Me Name is Revenge (Formerly Me Name is Death)
    Weight: 100kg
Shape: A low rounded wedge shape ala Firestorm.
Colour: Chrome, with ME NAME IS REVENGE written on the flipper.
    Dimensions: 70cm x 60cm x 20cm
Drive: 2x 60v B42-500 Magmotors, powered by 7x NiCad Battlepacks
Locomotion: 2 solid steel wheels with rubber tyres and magnesium hubs.
    Armour: 3.25mm hardox
    Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at the front, 5mm at sides, and 10mm at the rear.
    Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: The weapon, as always, is a front-hinged flipper, however it's now powered by a 2kg Co2 tank at 750psi. Finally, the robot has a serious weapon, as it can flip 500kg and tip over 1000kg. It has about 20-30 flips, give or take the weight of the enemy.
    Srimech: The flipper.
    Strength: A powerful flipper.
Weakness: High ground clearance at the back.
Bio: Me Name is Death returns with a revised Spanikophobia-style shape with the original flipper, now revised to use high-pressure Co2. The robot also has some excellent pushing power with its big 60v motors.

Right, I feel like I should join in and create a vapourbot...

    Gross Surgical Malpractice
    Weight: 100kg
Shape: T shaped undercutter, similar to Totally Offensive / Relic. You can see a photo of Totally Offensive here:
    http://www.madoverlord.com/lg/DSC041/DSC04135.jpg
    Colour: Bare titanium.
Dimensions: 110cm(60cm long main body)x80cm(rear spar)x15cm at its highest.
Drive: 2 S28-150 Magmotors powered by a shock mounted (batteries linked by flexible thick copper braid, and each battery pressed into a hole in a block of thermally conducting rubber similar to a flexible potting compound) 24v pack of A123 lithium cells, geared down through a couple of Team Whyachi drive gearboxes. The Magmotors have custom machined inserts designed to stop the magnets becoming displaced. All electronics are shock mounted as best as possible, isolated using rubber and their components potted to avoid impacts removing them from the PCBs.
Locomotion: Two 5 inch Colson wheels, driven from the gearboxes with the axles supported both sides by bearings.
Armour: 12.7mm 6AL-4V welded main body with 19.05mm bulkheads, 4.8mm top plate, 6mm wall thickness on the rear tube spar.
    Speed: 12mph
Ground Clearance: 5mm under the undercutting blade, 20mm+ elsewhere.
    Turning Circle: Zero
Weapon: 1m long, 10cm wide, 3cm thick 25kg Hardox bar with S7 tool steel teeth. This is spun by a 50hp Aixro XR50 294cc rotary kart engine at a 4:1 reduction, resulting in a top speed of 2700rpm and up to 300kJ of kinetic energy with the perimeter weighted teeth. The motor is electrically started by remote control and has undergone considerable weight reduction surgery.
    Srimech: UHMWPE self righting hoop
    Strength: Excessively powerful weapon.
Weakness: Very exposed to the rear. All the driving that's required is to keep it pointed at the other robot, though

    ARC Solder
    Weight: 100kg
Shape: A basic box on wheels with a scoop at the front.
Colour: The bluish colour of a blowtorch's hot flame, with the name written on the sides in chrome.
    Dimensions: 80cm x 70cm x 20cm
Drive: 4 36v PERM 80 motors, powered by 6x NiCad Battlepacks
Locomotion: 4 Go-kart wheels using customized magnesium hubs.
    Armour: 3.5mm Hardox
    Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at front due to scoop, and 5mm at sides and back.
    Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: There is a slot running down the middle of the scoop, which, like the original Minesweeper's scoop, can move slightly vertical so I get 0m ground clearance regardless of how the robot is flipped. In the slot is a 20kg hardox 3 pronged UltraViolence-style vertical spinning blade, powered by a 36v PERM 80 motor at 4000rpm. The tips are diamond-edged, and the blade should put out at least 50kj.
    Srimech: Invertible
Strength: Excellent pushing power and deadly weapon.
    Weakness: Exposed sides and rear.
Bio: A revision of a crap bot; once again, the robot is totally shockproofed, however it finally has a weapon and can finally do some pushing. As for whether it can still survive MDU4.1: We'll see...
I quickly plugged your spinning disc's stats into the team cosmos ke calculator using really long teeth so the weapon looks sort of like a three bladed windmill (as close as I can quickly get to an ultraviolence disc in the calculator.)

The parameters I used were (these directly correspond to the ones in the calculator):
    Teeth:
    Width 3
Height 4 (approx so you're invertible)
Length 4 (Width and length can be anything as long as the mass sums to ~40lb when you click calculate
    Distance 2
    No of teeth 3
Material steel (about the same density as hardox after a quick search of the forum)

    Disc:
    Material Steel
Thickness same as length of teeth (4 in this example)
    Diameter 2

This disc weighs just over 20kg in total and at 4000 rpm still only produces about 6.5kJ of energy.

I would suggest you redesign the disc and use the calculator
( http://www.teamcosmos.com/ke/ke.shtml ) to check your KE figures before posting the updated design.

Might I enquire where your energy figures come from Mark ?
