Thread: How could I Improve pt 2

  1. #381
I was wondering something...I was intending on stealing something from Aaron from a project I am involved in, and was wondering if I could know more about hydrostatic drives and if there were any asdvantages over electric drives?

I was thinking of this thing copied from Aaron:

Drive: The drive is a hydra-static drive train. It has a 42HP Honda CR125 motor bike motor (2005 model) with a custom made swash plate hydra-static pump bolted to the motor output shaft. The hydra-static drive provides full motor torque at 0MPH right up to 40MPH (Electric motors and normal hydraulic drives cannot provide this feat, if you google hydra-static, you€™ll find out why). 6 x 120mm wheels that are 100mm wide provide the maximum traction when coated in 15mm of Urathane Rubber (Volcalon).

-but spelt correctly and a bit differently worded, lol

Basically there is no difference between hydraulic and hydrostatic motors. The one version controls its speed through speeding up or lowering the rpm of the pump, while hydrostatic keeps the pump going to maintain the same working pressure, and a valve regulates the speed and direction.

    Advantages:
    - Even at 1 rpm you get maximum torque
    - very precise motor control

    Disadvantages:
    - You need more parts, so it is heavier than just a pump and motor.
    - 1 bubble of air and the system either doesnt work or with way less power, even chance of damage.
    - Chance of leakage is big. one leak, no pressure, no drive.
    - you need to keep the pump going at all times to keep pressure up, so it takes more battery power.

    or fuel

What sort of power would I be looking at from such a system though? And (this might be a stupid question) is there any problem with using standard hydraulic rams in a hydrostatic system?

  5. #385
The same power as from any other hydraulic system, there is no difference there.

And yes you can use hydraulic rams in a hydrostatic system, in fact most diggers do.

    looks good kody!

i have been quite keen on writing a tournament and have been flicking through the archives,so i have a good idea of how things work.

so could i have 2 robots for a battle please, if you could post them with your stats and tactics that would be helpful.

after i have posted the fight, please feel free to post any comments
