Thread: Pocketing aluminium

i think that is what it is called, when you machine pockets into metal?

anyway i was thiunking i might be able to save weight by doing this, but will it weaken my chassis? bearing in mind it is for a crusher

    thanks alex

Pocketing is used to remove weight where it isnt needed and can actually increase strength if done correctly. How? Because the material can flex more, it does not break (ultimate tensile strength).

To do this properly you would have to perform structural analysis to determine where the stress is on the material.

What the average roboteer does is get a drill out and start adding holes!

can it be done on cnc etc?

it can be done on a CNC mill or a manual mill if you have access to either.

Failing that, do what i do and use a jigsaw to take big odd shaped holes out of your chassis. This is how I cut the shapes on both hornet 2 and sting.
