import taxes are normally calculated on the CIF value - Cost Insurance and Freight. This basically means that the Cost of the goods and cost of delivering the goods are added together, a nominal rate of duty (usually a percentage) is charged on the CIF value. The CIF value and the import duty charge are added together and VAT at 17.5% is added on top. There is also a processing fee by the Courier/Parcelforce.
