NCC70 Speed Controllers

Ive just finished looking under Hydra for the day and have a bit of an issue with drive on one side of Hydra.

Ive traced the fault back to the speed controller (The mixer is telling it to work and there is power in but no power out) which when we were at Colchester appeared to be operating intermittently ie: we drove round in circles for a bit then had a good scrap with TAN and then next fight it wasnt working again and we went round in circles.

Is anyone able to tell me if the NCC70 is current limited? The motors are 36v 750W Bosch motors which from my experience would draw quite a bit more than 70A under a stall current. Which may be the reason.

I have yet to actually removeand inspect the controller but my team mate has told me he did notice some smoke coming out of it at some time.

The question I have is wether or not the speed controllers are sufficient for the motors?

The NCC70s are probably a little on the small size if you are running at 36v. The 4QDs are normally quite robust unless the response times have been modified. But at 36v, your stall current could be in the 200amp range and probably peaks well above what the NCC70 will safely handle.

However, you say the problem is intermittent. It is most likely a loose connection or dodgy relay.

And I would say, use the NCCs for something fun, like an electric bike or so, and put in a more modern, better handling and more mysteryproof speedo.
Team RCCs heavies are all put on Sidewinder.
And for that matter,TAN went from the larger Mythras to Sidewinder as well.

Seems it will give 100 - 110 amps and is current limited.

Spare Speedo is now in Hydra (Fast learning curve that was!). Its all working ok and just needs calibrating. I had a look at this and thought the following was how to do it:

1: Adjust acceleration pot to ensure it doesnt turn when it starts moving
2: Adjust speed pot so it goes in a straight line
3: Adjust deceleration pot so it doesnt turn when it stops

Maybe Im oversimplifying this but any advice would be welcome
