Thread: How Could I Improve...

  1. #1521
I actually think youve come along way building this spinner and you should try to perfect it before starting a new project

    just my opinion :P

  2. #1522
I agree with Martijn, really the stats were not that far off, just the basic flaws most vapourbots have when they start out.

Im in the process of redoing most of my squad, so could somebody just look over these few please?

    Robot Name: Helix
Shape: Tornado (including the angled rear) with angled sides, skirts and a front wedge
    Weight: 100kg
    Length: 80cm
    Width: 80cm
    Height: 25cm
    Motivation: 6 x vulcanised wheels
    Power: 2 x LEM-130s at 36v, 18HP
Armour: 4mm hardox top, sides, front and rear, 5mm titanium skirts and 5mm aluminium base
    Weaponry:
    1) The front wedge is made of 4mm hardox and has a wedge extender for zero ground clearance at the front
    2) A front 65cm long hardox axe, the head is shaped like Excalibur€™s from RW3 and it€™s on a rack and pinion system ala Killerhurtz. It is powered by a 80mm x 65mm ram at 1000psi from 2 x 3kg nitrogen bottles, the point is tungsten tipped and the underside serrated to really dig into opponents
    3) There are two tungsten tipped hardox spikes on either end of the angled rear
    4) The front wedge lifts up via 2 linear actuators, this is used to flip opponents and attack their base armour with the axe or to lift and then ram
    Top Speed: 17mph
Ground Clearance: Effectively 0 all round due to wedge at front and skirts at sides and rear, but 20mm behind them, they are all joined together with tungsten hinges to make them extremely hard to break
    Turning Circle: 0
Srimech: The axe is long enough to right it over the wedge
Colour: Black with some green and red
Strengths: Powerful axe and decent pushing power
Weaknesses: High GC behind the skirts
    Notes: Plenty of shock-proofing

    Robot Name: Sergeant Slaughter
    Shape: Wedge
    Weight: 100kg
    Length: 90cm
    Width: 80cm
    Height: 30cm
Motivation: 4 x CNC Aluminium wheels with vulcanised tyres
    Power: 2 x S28-400s at 24v, 9HP
Armour: 3.25mm hardox top, front, sides and rear, 5mm titanium skirts and 5mm aluminium base
    Weaponry:
    1) A rear horizontal spinning disc, 50 x 50cm in diameter, it is half inside the robot and half outside, it has two large tungsten tipped teeth welded onto the disc and curved to rip, it is powered by a LEM-130 at 36v, providing 67Kj per hit when at 3000rpm, it weighs about 25kg
    2) A Razer style crushing arm on the front, powered by the disc€™s kinetic energy, it is very jagged so when it pierces the opponents armour it holds on and can lift the opponent into the air with no danger of them falling off, it is powerful enough to pierce hardox, the point is tungsten tipped and the underside is serrated, there are lots of holes in it to keep the weight down. Because it is powered by kinetic energy and not hydraulics it will be fast as well
    3) No exactly a weapon as such, but there is a small hole just above the point of the crusher from which there comes a spike, powered by a car spring which is rewound by a 12v cordless drill motor at 19.6v, it is used to knock robots off the crusher and into the pit
    4) There are two sets of Mute-style barbs on the wedge to trap opponents under the crusher
    Top Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: Effectively 0 at sides and front due to the wedge at the front and the skirts at the sides, but it is 8mm at the rear and behind the skirts
    Turning Circle: 0
Srimech: There is a long bar on the back of the crusher to allow that to right it, it cannot be stranded because of the skirts, disc and crusher
Colour: Blood red, with green/yellow diagonally striped skirts and a dark blue disc
    Strengths: Powerful and unique weaponry
    Weaknesses: Armour not the strongest
Notes: Plenty of shock-proofing to protect from its own and other spinners

    Robot Name: S.M.R.O.D
    Shape: Cylinder
    Weight: 100kg
    Length: 85cm
    Width: 85cm
    Height: 20cm
Motivation: 8 x small wheels like Big Nipper, 4 on top and 4 on the bottom, coated in vulkalon for grip
    Power: 4 x S28-400 magmotors at 24v, 18HP
Armour: 1.905 grade 5 titanium for the ring, 5mm titanium on top and bottom
    Weaponry:
    1) The ring spins via 2 x S28-400s at 24v. It can reach it€™s optimum speed of 1500rpm in 3 seconds, and can deliver a 50Kj hit with the 2 tungsten tipped hardox teeth, curved to rip through armour and placed adjacent to each other
    Top Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: Effectively 0 due to a 5mm titanium skirt all the way around, the blades reach out further than the skirt so that it doesn€™t get in the way
    Turning Circle: 0
    Srimech: Invertible
Colour: Dark purple with red eyes on top
Strengths: Powerful weaponry, wheels cannot be hit by axes
Weaknesses: Skirt will rise when the ring spins due to gyroscopic forces
Notes: The name stands for Spinning Massacre Ring Of Destruction, and it€™s supposed to be a bit hard to pronounce, it has plenty of shock proofing to protect from its own and other spinners

    Robot Name: Flail
    Shape: Cylinder
    Weight: 100kg
    Length: 85cm
    Width: 85cm
    Height: 15cm
    Motivation: 4 x vulcanised wheels
    Power: 2 x S28-400s at 24v, 9HP
Armour: 4mm hardox all over apart from the base (5mm aluminium), top (5mm titanium) and the skirts (5mm titanium)
    Weaponry:
    1) The top armour panel spins around, via 2 LEM-130s at 36v; it can reach a maximum of 3000rpm, and has two maces attached by very tough steel cables. Each mace has tungsten tipped curved spikes and weighs 10kg, so when they hit they deal out about 65Kj of energy
    Top Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: Effectively 0 all around due to a skirt, but 8mm behind that skirt
    Turning Circle: 0
Srimech: Out of a hole in the top panel there shoots a spike, powered by a 2kg co2 bottle at 150psi, enough to right the robot 15-20 times per match
Colour: Red, with green and yellow Hypno-Disc style swirls on top
    Strengths: Powerful weaponry
    Weaknesses: Could be pants
Notes: Has plenty of shock-proofing to protect from its own and other spinners

    Robot Name: Buzz
Shape: Half-dome, with the missing side being flat and the front
    Weight: 100kg
    Length: 80cm
    Width: 75cm
    Height: 20cm
Motivation: 2 x vulcanised internally mounted go-kart wheels
    Power: 2 x LEM-130s at 36v
Armour: 4mm hardox all over except for base, 6mm titanium
    Weaponry:
    1) Large front horizontal claws, when open there is 100cm between them, and they close completely via hydraulics from a vivoil pump at 3000psi, the points are tungsten tipped and they are serrated and drilled with speed holes, they are made of hardox
    2) They claws are joined to a rear hinged arm powered by a linear actuator, this hardox arm is hinged at the very back of the robot, the idea is to grab hold and then lift into the air or just grab hold to cause damage
    3) Between the front claws there is a small X-Terminator style scoop, made of 1cm titanium and just low enough so that it doesn€™t get in the way
    Top Speed: 20mph
Ground Clearance: Effectively 0 at the front due to the scoop, 8mm everywhere else
    Turning Circle: 0
Srimech: The arm can right the robot in less than a second
Colour: Black and yellow bumblebee-style bodywork with the name painted in gold on top and blood stained claws
Strengths: Effective weaponry, especially when there is a pit
    Weaknesses: High ground clearance
Notes: Hatchet has become a bumblebee! Also it has plenty of shockproofing on board

    Robot Name: Duncan
Shape: Octagon, with sloped sides and a large tyre around the outside
    Weight: 100kg
    Length: 85cm
    Width: 85cm
    Height: 25cm
Motivation: 2 x internal vulcanised go-kart style wheels
    Power: 2 x S28-400s at 24v, 9HP
Armour: 4mm hardox all over the top, front, sides and rear, 7mm HDPE base, 5mm titanium skirts
    Weaponry:
    1) An 11kg tungsten hammer, powered by a LEM-200 at 60v to give it excellent speed and to produce 3Kj per hit, possibly hitting up to three times per second. To counter the forces of the hammer there is a vacuum device on the bottom of the robot that sucks it to the floor, that is also useful against rammers, it can be turned on and off during the match
    2) The tyre around the robot protects from spinners, also there are two static double headed hardox tungsten tipped pick axes placed adjacent to each other on the sides of the tyre, this allows the robot to use its two wheel drive and spin on the spot, functioning as a thwackbot, each hit can deliver about 30Kj
    Top Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: Effectively 0 all the way around due to skirts, 10mm behind that
    Turning Circle: 0
Srimech: The hammer will always right the robot
Colour: Gold hammer, red bodywork, blue tyre, silver pick axes
    Strengths: Powerful hammer
    Weaknesses: Weak-ish base armour
Notes: The successor to my previous robots Henry VIII and Bloody Mary, Duncan was the Scottish king murdered by Macbeth in the Shakespeare play, also has plenty of shockproofing

Helix: Not at all bad, no problems that I can see after a quick check, looks pretty close to the weight limit.

Sgt. Slaughter: I think someone else more experienced than me would have to tell whether the weaponry was feasible, and it might be pushing the weight limit slightly, but otherwise alright.

SMROD: Looks a bit like a Paul machine to me The tungsten teeth would just rip off on impact, I remember reading Tip-Top had tungsten carbide teeth on its disc at the qualifiers, and they all just broke on impact. I reckon the Hardox teeth alone would be enough to cause damage...but other than that, no problems.

Flail: Looks like Mauler...no major problems, perhaps a bit overweight but not excessively so.

    Buzz: Nothing wrong.

Duncan: Not sure if HDPE would be an adequate base if you were attaching components to it; if its just armouring then it would be fine, but thats nitpicking slightly. Otherwise okay.

All looking very good, I must say
