Thread: The Crash & Burn Tournament: Extreme!

  1. #101
We€™re at another Heat! Let€™s go!

    Heat B
    Mayhem
Axe-O-Lotl vs. Starstorm 2 vs. Sauron

Representing Christopher Mason and Team Dinowarrior: Axe-O-Lotl! Recent heat finalist of C&B2 makes it way into our second mayhem. Powerful axe, powerful drive, and a Comengetorix-style shape give it a good stance, but it has very questionable armour.

Representing Frank Goacher and Team Bored: Starstorm 2 Our first full-body flipper run on 500psi and can launch robots off its 4mm hardox dome shape, complete with holes to reduce weight. Its linear actuated skirts are tough too, but it can be outpushed.

Representing Aaron Knight and Team Disctructive Technologies: Sauron! It€™s a 2WD translational spinner with 4 hardox teeth on the edges of the spinner (see render). It€™s not quite fast to drive, but its tip speed is 80mph. Add 5mm hardox armour to that and you€™ve got a pretty mean spinner.

    Roboteers, stand by...

    Booth 1: Sauron, Starstorm 2
    Booth 2: Axe-O-Lotl

House Robots: Our newest housie to the ranks, Ivy-X, pairing up with Exa-Gore-Ic: AI.

Axe-O-Lotl screams out of his spot and collides with Sauron immediately, stopping the spinner, and then bringing the axe down...on nothing! Miss! Starstorm joins in and attacks the rear of Axe-O-Lotl, and FLIP! Over goes the dinobot on top of Sauron. Starstorm however doesn€™t stop there: it plows into Sauron as well, lowering the skirts just in time to slide underneath Sauron€™s 10mm clearance, as Axe-O-Lotl rights itself off the back of Aaron€™s spinner. FLIP! Over goes Sauron as well, but Starstorm has left him alone, and has headed for Axe-O-Lotl, immediately attacking the rear and sliding underneath! FLIP! Axe-O-Lotl soars, achieving more air than before, and is upended once more! Sauron begins to spin up again, this time unhindered, and soon reaches maximum velocity! Starstorm sees its chance, and as Axe-O-Lotl rights itself again, Starstorm flies directly underneath and pops Axe-O-Lotl€™s underbelly with the dome, sending it flying over onto its back once more, and right in the direction of Sauron! The spinner wastes no time and tears a path of desdtruction towards its target. Axe-O-Lotl waits...and waits...and Starstorm starts shoving it directly at Sauron! Axe-O-Lotl fires the axe and rights itself directly on top of Sauron, stopping its spinning speed, but the edges inside the translational cylinder (wait, not cylinder, er...torus? ) catch the wheels and bank Axe-O-Lotl off of Sauron and away. Starstorm tackles Sauron again and slides underneath with the lnear skirts. FLIP! Sauron goes over again, righted, but Starstorm has already turned back towards Axe-O-Lotl, who€™s coming right after him! He stops just short of the dome and gives it a good WHACK with the axe, however it catches one of the holes and so no damage is really done to the armour of Starstorm, but Axe-O-Lotl backs off before Starstorm can retaliate. Sauron heads over towards one of the CPZ to try and cut Axe-O-Lotl off but Chris, seeing this, reverses, just away from an incoming Starstorm and gives Frank€™s bot another good WHACK with the axe, this time directly hitting the top and giving it a miniscule dent. Starstorm flies underneath Axe-O-Lotl before the latter can get out of danger and FLIP! Axe-O-Lotl flies up, and the rear of the underside bangs into Starstorm€™s uplifted dome, thus falling onto its rear end, but a little push from Starstorm sends it over. Axe-O-Lotl tries to right itself without further interference but Starstorm is persistant and pushes it into an empty CPZ. Ooh, Exa-Gore-Ic flies out of his CPZ but is blocked by Sauron! And there€™s our €˜newcomer€™ house robot, Ivy-X, with those lovely spinning chains. Axe-O-Lotl fires the axe but Starstorm is at him immediately. FLIP! Axe-O-Lotl is pushed up against the arena wall, but falls back down onto Starstorm€™s lid. Sauron decides to get out of the way, and does so as Exa-Gore-Ic trundles past. FLIP! Axe-O-Lotl is popped up again, and the top is pushed up against an angle grinder, but leaning against it throws the axe out, balancing itself off the wall and back onto its wheels, but unfortunately Ivy is right there with the chains!
    CRASH!
Not necessarily a huge hit, but it does send Axe-O-Lotl back towards Starstorm, who again slides €˜neath the front and FLIP! Again we have an inverted Axe-O-Lotl. Sauron heads across the pit and right for Starstorm, but Starstorm really seems to be ignoring him for now and is concentrating its attack completely on poor Axe-O-Lotl. WHOA! Axe-O-Lotl has buried its wedge into Ivy and is slamming her into the wall! WHACK! Whoa, what got into him?! No damage from the axe, though, but Axe-O-Lotl has got the house bot now and heads straight for Sauron. Aaron continues to chase down Starstorm but Starstorm loses the 8mph bot quite easily, allowing Axe-O-Lotl to shove Ivy into Sauron€™s face!
    CRASH!!!
WHOA! Ivy€™s just been sent flying by that huge blow, right off the wedge, no damage though, but Sauron is still spinning! Axe-O-Lotl charges quickly, noticing that Sauron is not quite rotating as well as before.
    CRASH!
Axe-O-Lotl takes the hit and is spun around, the wedge now horribly torn, allowing Starstorm to charge in and dump Axe-O-Lotl into Sauron. Sauron stops spinning immediately and is pushed back into the CPZ. Exa-Gore-Ic receives the translational spinner gratefully and squeezes in, the massive jaws closing around Sauron ominously! FLIP! Axe-O-Lotl is sent almost terminally skyward, but falls down to earth onto his back. Ivy is quite peeved and blasts in again with the flails, striking Starstorm.
    CRASH!
Ineffective blow against that dome, and Starstorm€™s attention is received, but Ivy slams into him harshly. FLIP! Ivy...is also sent over, but fully invertible anyway. Starstorm turns backs to the CPZ.

    10...9...8...7...

Time almost over already? Wow. Exa-Gore-Ic drags Sauron over to the flame pit and leaves him to broil.

    6...5...4...

FLIP! Axe-O-Lotl is righted but Starstorm keeps at it. Axe-O-Lotl gives him another WHACK with the axe, giving the dome another small dent.

    3...2...1...

Ivy smacks Starstorm again with the flails and butts in, as Axe-O-Lotl buries the wedge in as well. Sauron meanwhile burns on the flames...

    CEASE!

A three-way judges€™ decision! This should be interesting...

    Axe-O-Lotl - Starstorm 2 - Sauron

    Pinball
    Dantomkia

Our pinball bout tonight features Mike Lamberts Dantomkia! Its a double wedge with a flipper in the inner wedge. Its done quite well in fights, but its never been in a pinball challenge before...or has it?

    Roboteers, stand by...

House Robots: Taki-san guards a 50-point target, Double Whamlet guards another opposite, and Obelix Bulguous guards the big 75 point target. Asterix Heroicus roams the arena at will. So thats...4 house bots.

Dantomkia speeds away, right after the barrels, toppling many down at once...and one rolls straight into the pit. Dantomkia spins around, knocking some barrels away (and another down the pit ) and heads for the ramp! Oh, hes over it, well done, another 20 points added, and AHH! Hes flipped Obelix Bulguous and toppled him away! Hits the 75 point button, he does! Very good run so far, but now Asterix is after him, hell have to be careful here, and he backs...all the way into the multiball release, good, another 10 points for that. Oh! Now hes taking on Taki-san and a 50 point marker! Nope, drives straight onto the wedge aaaaaand...flipped over. Asterix shoves him into the wall, and pins him there to stop him self-righting, whilst Taki inserts the cutting blade in.
    CRASH!
The rear end of Dantomkia does not take well to that blow, a nice gash cut right through, and Asterix releases Dantomkia. Dantomkia...ah, there we go, righted. Taki shoves him away, but Dantomkia is quite determined to get at that 50 point button and tries to get at the side. Its denied, as Asterix again shoves him away, and right back into a few more barrels, ah, thats all the barrels on that side gone then. But unfortunately for Dantomkia time is up.

Next event - Challenge Belt: Its Y4 vs. Liar in this battle for glory!

  3. #103

  4. #104
    Challenge Belt
    Y4 vs. Liar

Representing Christopher Mason and Team Dinowarrior: Y4! A wilder version of T-Minus, it€™s got 5mm titanium armour, which isn€™t too bad, and is invertible, though with slightly exposed wheels. Its main feature is the flipping arm which can send 300kg bots onto their backs no problem, and can right Y4 in a stylish way. However, with its batteries and motors set at 12v, it€™s not going to be very pushy.

Representing Martijn Benschop and Team Varying Every Day: Liar! No, not the new one. 8mm titanium armour give it more protection than its opponent, and like its opponent it has a hugely powerful flipper (1000psi) capable of tossing robots its size many meters in the air! It may not have much pushing power but at 24v, its S28s will be pushy enough. The side wedges on the flipper help to aid in getting under opponents when spinning around, but they won€™t damage the opponent.

The Challenge Belt kick-off is underway! Liar approaches first and speeds into Y4, who greets him with the flipper blade. WHAM! Both cancel out, and it looks like Liar is the slightly more powerful here, as he€™s currently pushing Y4 away towards the arena wall! Y4 backs off, but Liar persists, and both clearance confront each other again...and it€™s Y4 winning the duel! FLIP! Liar is flicked, and tipped over. FLIP! Liar rights himself, but right back onto Y4€™s arm! Y4 heads to the arena wall! FLIP! It€™s Liar who activates his flipper first, and throws himself backwards, but that only sends him directly onto the flipper blade of Y4 and...NO! Y4 tosses him along the wall! Martijn breathes a deep sigh of relief and directs Liar back over to Y4 and they meet again! Liar prevails! FLIP! Y4 is tossed over. This only means he can€™t use the flipper, and Y4 gets away before Liar can catch him...not long, however, before Liar is able to catch him! Liar smacks him with the wedge, but Y4 is away again before Liar can flip...can Liar use the flipper? Y4 activates the flipper and a beautiful 540 is performed, just as Liar gets to his spot - FLIP! Oh! So he can use the flipper, he was just waiting for his moment! Martijn grins as Y4 goes soaring into the arena wall, back onto his back. Y4 rights himself in the blink of an eye however, popping straight back over this time, and is able to get away before Liar can get in for another devastating toss. Chris is quite determined, showing in his face as he works the controlls for Y4, who charges into Liar once more! Liar veers of course slightly and goes for a wedge thwack to Y4. Bad idea! Y4 slides under the front of the right side wedge and FLIP! Liar is over again...FLIP! And righted again! Y4 is right there however, and before Liar can recover, he€™s over again! (FLIP!) Y4 charges into Liar again and carries him to the arena wall, but Liar pops up again (FLIP!) righting himself and Y4 nearly smacks his snout into the arena wall! Liar turns and flicks into Y4€™s side! FLIP! Y4 now has his turn of being inverted! Liar charges in and gets another flip in, tossing Y4 in a perfect 360! Y4 blows this scene and runs away, activating the flipper as he does so, thus righting himself, but Liar crashes into him and FLIP! WHOA! Y4 goes sailing...OVER THE WALL!!!

Whatever, these two bots are filler entries anyway.

    All-Stars
    Firestorm V vs. Nightmare

Representing Graham Bone and Team Firestorm: Firestorm V! Hes scorched opponents with that awesome front-hinged flipper and appeared in the Grand Final three times. Very low to the ground, and very capable of sliding underneath opposing skirts with that wedge blade. He also has pretty decent armour, but with only 2WD he wont be much of a shover.

Representing Jim Smentowski and Team Nightmare: Nightmare! Thats his name, and knocking the hell out of other robots is his game! The disc travels at 1600rpm and is SERIOUSLY powerful. In reality, though, hes got NO armour, only a (very sturdy) chassis, and he doesnt look that balanced despite being flipped only once.

Very experienced, these two, excellent drivers, but who will get their stuffing beaten in this War of Independence?

Lets go! Firestorm is off the mark and crashing into Nightmare, who turns to give Firestorm a taste of his wheel. Firestorm crashes into the wheel and is struggling to get under the side of it. This gives Nightmare plenty of time to get that lovely disc going, but Firestorm turns and has a go at Nightmares rear. Nightmare tries to spin around but his tail wedge is pushed around by Firestorm and he cant seem to get around and attack. Likewise, Firestorm is unable to slide under that rear wedge, even from the side of it...oh, no wait, hes under it, but not all the way, only the wedge blade, and NOT the wedge itself, is under it. Nightmares tail suddenly scrapes the arena wall as it passes, and Firestorm is jolted into the tail, and completely under it! Nightmare drives off, however, before he goes off-balance, and spins around to face Firestorm. Firestorm is already driving at it, right at one of the wheels, but Jim backs his robot off, and Nightmare keeps facing Firestorm with the disc. The pressure is on, and Firestorm doesnt want to put itself at a disadvantage, so he twists here and there, trying to position himself, when Nightmare jumps the gun and comes right at him! As he nears, Firestorm pulls a U-turn, backs past Nightmare, and goes for the wheels again, from the rear. Nightmare is pushed up onto the wedge by his left wheel! Firestorm doesnt want to go too far, however, knowing that the disc is still spinning and very dangerous, and slowly pushes Nightmare, but he can only spin Nightmare clockwise. Nightmare tries to turn around...AND DOES!
    CRASH!!!
The disc slams into Firestorms flipper and gashes it severely, also knocking Nightmare back quite a bit! Firestorm...is okay, and still coming straight for Nightmare, and slides right under the dormant disc, and up comes the flipper! Damaged as it is, it still works, and its got Nightmare, and Firestorm is pushing him towards the wall! NO! No flip! Nightmare manages to keep balance! Firestorm still has him, though, and decides to give him to Double Big Mac, who is nearby. This cant end well...
    CRASH!!!
Nightmare is spun right around, the tail getting smashed across the side, with Firestorm still neath the disc! Asterix flies out and hammers the side of Firestorm, tilting both bots...AND NIGHTMARE IS OUT OF THE ARENA!!! What a tactic! What a hoist! Firestorm has just flipped Nightmare over the fence! A SUPERB flip, right into the middle of the tilted Nightmare, and sent it disc-first, right over the edge, and out! Asterix backs away, which is a bad idea because now its Firestorms turn to attack the house robots, as DBM is gotten under and flipped immediately! Asterix barges in, only to find itself on Firestorms flipper and brought to the wall opposite, slammed against it with the flipper and stacked. How very pathetic.

All right, AJ has tactics in, and Steve needs his in.

Also, Matty Fowler, the next match after this one has one of your reserved spaces. If you dont get your stuff in within two weeks, I will either delete your spots or randomly grab a handful of your bots on Vapourbot Resource and put them in instead, capiche?

The moment you€™ve all been waiting for...is here at last. The battle you wanted so much is now before you.

    All-Stars
Wedge Devolution vs. Son of Ripper 5.5

Representing Steven McGregor and Team Braveheart: Wedge Devolution! A true golden-oldie, and still kicking bot. Basically a low wedge with 4mm hardox armour and Biohazard-style titanium skirts at the sides and back. LEM130s and 4WD proper the dead-on 100kg bot to 16mph. Apart from the glorious power, what makes this bot so damn successful is that lovely Chaos 2-style flipper, able to flip 1000kg easily. The bottom of the blade is bent, just like Bigger Brother€™s plate, and thus should be to get under robots much easier. It€™s also got awesome manoeuvrability. The only thing wrong with it...limited CO2 capacity, as with all other CO2 flippers. Wedge Devolution has won VFT6 and come fourth in Mechanical Noise - Series 1, plus achieving high ranking seedings in countless other tournaments.

Representing Andrew Jackson and Team ???: Son of Ripper 5.5! All-rounder is the theme here. Tall box shape, front wedge, sloped and skirted sides. That wedge also has a nice wedge extender like Firestorm. Also LEM130 powered, and 2WD makes its top speed 12mph. 4mm hardox is the monocoque on SoR, quite tough indeed. Like Wedge Devo it has a front flipper but it €œgoes across the top and then down the front wedge and finally forming a horizontal Bigger Brother like flipping platform€, according to its builder, and is less powerful but more conservative. Also, at the rear is a horizontal hardox spinning bar, powered by an S28-400 Mag. No RPM or kJ factor given, but it should be quite tough. Son of Ripper won the first VFT tournament, and like Wedge Devolution has pulled through countless tournaments with good rankings.

    Here we go!

    ACTIVATE!!!

It has begun! And both bots are right after each other, desperate to get at each other€™s sides for an advantage! Wedge Devo takes an aggressive stance and goes right for SoR, who turns and makes a diagonal path towards Wedge Devo€™s sides. This slightly exposes his own sides and Wedge Devo pours on the power, but just a little too late, as SoR himself turns, and both catch the edge of each other€™s front wedges, forcing them to face each other. AJ and Steve smirk at each other from their respective control booths. SoR reverses away from his rival, but Wedge Devo moves in at an angle. Again we are treated to a display of excellent manoeuvrability as SoR juts in for Wedge Devo€™s side, and Wedge Devo turns now, but SoR halts, turns the other way, and tries to get going at the other side skirt. Wedge Devo is right there to block him, and again they are stuck facing each other€™s wedge.

Therefore Steve decides to sod his tactics for a second and take a risk: Wedge Devo dives headlong into SoR€™s wedge, and with a slight BANG they are nose to nose, grinding their motors to try and push the other away. However it€™s Steve€™s 4WD that prevails here over AJ€™s 2WD, and SoR feels itself being forced back towards the wall. Wedge Devo continues to push, but SoR suddenly pulls out of the push and spins around...to find Wedge Devo still coming at him at the front! Steve smiles, as AJ€™s face shows slight signs of shock after seeing this beautiful strategy of Steve€™s. SoR continues to spin around, but Wedge Devo continues to be in his face. AJ gets an idea, and spins the other way. It works, and Wedge Devo continues the previous circular motion, and his rear end is now completely exposed! SoR turns and backs into him with the spinning bar, but it€™s too late to take advantage as Wedge Devo turns the wedge back towards SoR.

    CRASH!

The spinning hardox bar greets Wedge Devo€™s flipper and spins SoR away from his opponent, though hardly even causing a dent in Steve€™s bot€™s weapon. Wedge Devo flies in again to take advantage of a stalled SoR but he€™s back in, now coming in the spinning bar instead of the flipper. Wedge Devo races right in, hoping to get under that bar and toss his opponent over, but SoR turns clockwise, much like he would if he had a 1m turning circle, and finds himself at Wedge Devo€™s side again! And this time, Wedge Devo is too late to avoid it!

    CRASH!!!

Steve feels slight relief, as the skirt suffers a hit but manages to stay on for the time being, however, it€™s sent Wedge Devo flying quite a bit. SoR zooms in with the flipper, and rams Wedge Devo€™s side before the latter can recover from the hit, but no luck. Wedge Devo turns clockwise, just like SoR did, and finds himself at SoR€™s side! The story is the same as SoR€™s, sadly, as again skirts prevail. SoR backs off and Wedge Devo goes flying in front of him, exposing the side but not for long, turning quickly before SoR can even attempt a movement. We€™re back at the beginning of the fight again, as both competitors are facing each other and neither have accumulated, really, any damage. Both roboteers, however, are determined to triumph over the other, and will go by any means to do so. Wedge Devo and SoR charge at each other!

And the favour is in Steve€™s, as Wedge Devo€™s plate successfully manages to slide under SoR€™s flipper AND wedge extender and leaves it hanging there! Wedge Devo wastes no time, carrying SoR - BZZT! OH NO! The arena saws have interfered with Steve€™s attempt for an OOTA! FLIP! Good thinking. Lots of sparks, but that didn€™t distract Steve enough to hit the flipper button just in time, resulting in SoR getting his world turned on its head. SoR, though invertible, really wishes to be right€”side-up and POP! Over he goes as Wedge Devo recovers from the saw hit and charges towards SoR once more! AJ is unwilling for a repeat episode of that scary moment and resumes his main tactics; getting the spinning bar ready, he pulls off another spin, but Steve watches SoR€™s movements and Wedge Devo continues to point the wedge at his opponent, not wanting to risk exposing the skirts again.

SoR suddenly places himself right in front of Wedge Devo. Steve hesitates, and then like lightning moves in! AJ grins as SoR then drives in a clockwise arc again, getting the flipper into the side of the mobile Wedge Devo, and it€™s a good€™un! The flipper slides under Wedge Devo€™s skirts! FLIP! Wedge Devo is inverted! SoR hurries to his preferred spot at the rear of Steve€™s bot, who FLIP! rights itself...right onto SoR€™s wedge! FLIP! Wedge Devo goes over again! SoR charges in, getting under the rear of Wedge Devo and pushes it to the wall. Steve waits, not wanting to waste CO2 yet, waiting for the right moment. AJ however is fully aware of what€™s going on and only slightly gets under Wedge Devo€™s rear. FLIP! Wedge Devo is tossed, and the underbelly hits the wall, but doesn€™t stay there for long, as the VFT6 champ tilts back towards SoR and FLIP! NOW Wedge Devo activates the flipper and WOAH! What a fantastic acrobatic display! It€™s definitely a 540, but SoR spins around and...is foiled by Wedge Devo€™s rear skirt.

SoR pushes, hard, but Wedge Devo does an arc himself, and finds himself at SoR€™s side again...and again no luck, the skirts hold up, or should I say hold down. SoR backs off, and both seem able to take whatever the other can dish out here. Wedge Devo goes for another dip at the side skirts or SoR. AJ turns around and exposes the rear hardox bar and drives off, with Wedge Devo on his tail. He drives in a clockwise arc again, maybe to try to trick Steve again, but suddenly goes right past Wedge Devo, as Steve turns his bot slightly, and the result is definitely in AJ€™s favour. SoR swiftly smashes the bar into Wedge Devo€™s rear skirt!

    CRASH!!!

Oh that HAD to hurt! Steve cringes as the rear skirt goes flying off and lands several meters away from where he wants it to be, but this has indeed turned Wedge Devo right around and facing SoR€™s rear! Not a good plan. SoR tries to get away but too late - FLIP! SoR goes flying into the arena wall and lands inverted! The now upside-down Son of Ripper turns and jets away just as Wedge Devo comes in for the OOTA, resulting in Wedge Devo eating arena wall. Cue the self-right - FLIP! SoR is back on his proper side, and ready for action! Wedge Devo turns to face SoR, and it€™s a stand-off again...Wedge Devo moves in, and SoR retreats...to have a go at Wedge Devo€™s side! Wedge Devo turns, but SoR has gone all the way around to get at the rear, but only ends up getting the side, which ain€™t too bad considering he€™s gotten under the side skirt! FLIP! Wedge Devo goes over, and Steve mashes the flipper control. FLIP! Wedge Devo goes back over...into the path of SoR€™s spinning bar!

    CRASH!!!

Removed from two of your skirts is not such a good thing, and the previously hit side skirt from before now joins the rear skirt in freedom, and the devastating hit sends Wedge Devo into a pirouette again! SoR moves in again with the flipping arm, but Steve turns his ever-so-slightly wounded wedgebot to face him again. SoR veers off-course at another attempt to get at those delicious sides, but Wedge Devo turns with him, and attacks SoR€™s own sides! Finally! Wedge Devo gets under SoR€™s skirts this time! FLIP! SoR is launched by the high pressure flipper; it€™s a 360, but Wedge Devo comes in again and slides under! FLIP! SoR goes over onto his back this time. This isn€™t working out exactly like AJ planned, and he carefully moves SoR away from Wedge Devo, with the latter in hot pursuit. With the inverted wedge pointing at Wedge Devo...FLIP! SoR pops himself into the air, and keeps the bar spinning. Wedge Devo flies in regardless, and the bar has little to no effect on the wedge, but it€™s worked in AJ€™s favour nonetheless: it€™s moved SoR away from Wedge Devo!

    10...9...8...7...

Finally, the end of the matches approaches. Steve moves in again, not wanting to show signs of fatigue, and the two meet nose-to-nose.

    6...5...4...

Wedge Devo pushes SoR backwards, and towards the wall. SoR spins in a backwards arc, and Wedge Devo goes flying forward, right past him.

    3...2...1...

SoR moves in, but can€™t get under the remaining side skirt. Still, he manages to push Wedge Devo back a bit...
