that really happened
Yes, I used the same vid when i held a presentation for a holiday camp where students had a week to build their own robot to fight at the end of the camp. The robot is question is Gman I think.
I too have this clip on my hard disk for future educational entertainment. And if I remember this story correctly Stu got away unscathed.
Terribly terribly lucky he was.
Mr Stu? Me? WTF? That wasnt me! I made the video clip like 4 or 5 years ago from the footage given to me by the builder of Gman like 4 or 5 years ago!! Also. I forgot his name attualy to be honest.. im sure Dave DMac will know as they were good mates.. but the first builder of Gman is the old bloke in that video.
Mr Stu

If I remember correctly the ram was only working on a fraction of its true power. Had it been working on full pressure his hand would have disappeared.
I doubt 2 50mm bore low pressure rams will have delivered much more power.
But I remember a discussion with Stu about this clip.
Even with low power/pressure the retract will be about 300 kg. With the leverage taken in account, about 200 kg.
Not pleasant, and a broken wrist is a real possibility, but to amputate a body part you need or more power and less spacing, or a very sharp edge.
Yeah if i remember rightly he had about 16 bar to fire.. but had a 2nd regulator to bring the retracting power to about 5 bar... and his watch got in the way which took most of the strain when the flipper came down. Saw wrist for a few days i beleive he had.
Mr Stu
Stu was unscated in this, as he wasnt even close to the incident.
The guy who was getting clamped was the builder of Gman, and that wasnt Stu.
The builder was Lee Hattersly, as said the retract was at a lower setting, still very lucky, if I rembemer correctly the flipper weighed about 4K
