    Basically You need two servos, one per motor, and 4 micro switches (avaliable from maplins or other for about 20p each) two per servo. Set up the switches so that one is normal polarity to the motor and the other is reverse. So when the servo moves one way the motor goes forwards and vice versa. But obviously there is no speed control.

    This is how we and many other builder started.

    Personnally I would go down the electronize route as you will have proper control over your robot and I can see you spending a good long while trying to put something together which may not be reliable enough for combat.

    Just my 2 cents.
