Gary, thats dedication , Make the most of all the equipment in the engineering dept as well. I got extensive use of their manual machines and some cnc work done and some materials for T4 while at Lboro.
Bex, Yeah will do, groups of us from uni used to go there for the best nights out when we were bored of loughborough.
not all unis allow it though sam.
the university i went to were not insured to do any work in their workshops unless it was on the lesson plans and individually risk assessed.
not letting engineering students engineer is completely stupid of course, as in my opinion workshops should be like libraries, open access to students on that course to improve their knowledge on the subject. but hey, i dont run a university so what would i know?
Is that your next challenge James? ... Run a university
no, be a dad
to be a good one is the biggest challenge there is apparently
Yea but its a fantastic challenege im sure. Has baby arrived yet?
Hee hee James, I totally agree with your views on uni workshops. Please come and talk some sense into the Glasgow Uni engineering department
(Sorry to continue with the hijacking of your thread Sam - you can have it back now lol )

Its a shame to hear what some unis are like.
I got the same responce when I spoke to the technicians but they are all told that only uni work is to be carried out in the workshops. However if you speak to the head of engineering and get their authorisation the techs become very helpful, and soon make you a risk assessment.
Of course it all depends on the head of eng. With Garys previous record I think he would have a very good chance. Perhaps if you offer good photos of the robot for posters, it is something else to show perspective students.
(They were delighted when I offered T4 for a couple of open days last year).
But like you say everywhere is different, I may have been lucky, but its always worth asking.
the baby has not arrived yet, but ill let you know when she does
Unfortunatly i went to NEWI in north wales, and the head of department there is a complete (insert rude body part here) in that, not only did he not want students doing anything in the workshops, hed then hire things in and claim we made them. prime example when the queen came to visit and we proudly displayed all the racing cars built by students at the uni. Only one was actually built at the uni and that was by staff. students were banned from working on it. the rest of the cars (6 of them) were hired in from local racing teams and resprayed in uni colours.
Im sure Gary will have more luck, as its unlikely there are 2 such complete waste of space unis in the UK.
I can name another...but dont get me started on that!
