What pressure are you planning on running this at? What material are you planning to use?
Ideally you should be aiming to have the cylinder hydraulically pressure tested and certified.
rs has some hydraulic tubing tested to like 1000 bar
i wanted to modify a hydralic ram so it only runs on about 16bar but could be able to run at full pressure (50 bar). It have about 25mm thick steel either end and a 5mm ali cylinder in the middle.
Have a quick squint at this thread.....

What wall thickness and grade of aluminium would be needed for a HP ram? Thanks.
My suggestion, with no offense at all to you Phillip, would be that if you do not know this, dont even try.
I only say this because building a ram is dangerous if you get it wrong. If you must have a HP ram, Mario does fantastic ones that are light, well made, and safe/tested. I know this isnt the advice you asked for, and I hope you are not offended.
If you must make it yourself, please beware, you may get advice from people on this subject who are either guessing or have made on by trial and error. Be sure they are qualified to give you the information.
Best of luck.
James, Philip knows my work, hes using a steel ram like yours.
Wall thickness and grade all depend on how all is connected and mainly, the bore.
Marauder now uses a 70 mm * 53 mm Mario super ram. It sends feathers flying. I was thinking of going to a 100 mm bore with 100 mm stroke.
All weapon, little armour.
While I could use an old hydraulic ram and convert it, I thought that aluminium would be lighter.
I have seen that a paintball bottle is about 1/8. I would assume that this sort of thickness would flex under pressure and release all of the gas around the sides of the piston seals.
I want to make it thick enough to do the job, but not to thick to waste weight. Whatever I do, I will get it tested by a local certifier.
The 100 bore rams I have made in ali use 5.5mm wall and 20mm bottom bolted down with 12 M6 tread ends glued 20mm deep in the ram.
This means the ali body was original 100*120mm tube, with a polished inner wall. 20mm from top and body are to mount the bolts.
