Jonno,
They are trying to re-create the environment a billionth of a second after the Big Bang to look for the birth of the Universe and among other things trying to find the Higgs Particle, by some people referred to as the God Particle. It is the very fabric of space and all matter it contains. The stuff atom parts are made of. That is the hypothesis at least. This experiment is trying to establish evidence for it.
Also see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPxYdObyJ2A for a nice explanation.
ahhhhh.... im just about to watch about it on the news !!![]()
Why are they doing it?
Partly because they can, partly because scientists are naturally nosy buggers and partly because of potential devlopments that can come from it. By being able to take things back to the building blocks they can build new things. This throws up a world of options for potential uses for the outcomes. It may lead to great advances in medicines, power sources and all sorts of other stuff.
That said, it might not!!
How they do it? Summat to do with banging protons and atoms together. Sounds a bit like microwaves on steroids to me. Quite sure if its that simple Craigll have one fitted to his van soon enough so you can see how it works. Maybe hell reverse it to stop his robots falling into a black hole![]()
Andy
The method even though very sophisticated is actually quite crude.
The way they intend to do that is like a pinball machine launches a pinball with as much speed as possible around the table. In this case the table is 28km wide, the balls are particles called Hadrons, and they smash them into each other close to the speed of light at almost absolute 0 temperature.
Destruction, I like it.![]()
