A rear hinged flipper has the flipping tip (the edge which will travel the greatest distance) right under the opponent from the start whereas a front hinged flipper has to travel under the opponent to get the flipping tip even close to the opponent.
Its not always true that you need to be 2-3mm under to flip someone over with a rear hinged flipper - sometimes that only lifts them up and then they skid off. Granted you dont need to be under as far but you still need to get under a good way.
Its happened to Mute a lot, rear hinged flipper gets under a few mil, fires and Mute slides off. Mute lands on its wheels to meet the rear hinge-er with its flipper in the air.
I say have the best of both worlds - fit a front and rear hinged flipper!
To-shay, Dan. But doesnt fitting two flippers make each flipper less powerful? I know its different for you, but for more robots wouldnt having two flippers take away the power of each one. Like, one big flipper could be more powerful then two little ones.
From my observations, neither type of flipper is better than the other, here are the advantages of each
Rear Hinged:
Dont need to get as far under to successfully flip
Better at getting bots OOTA
Could damage the opponent with a powerful enough flip
Front Hinged:
Easier to self right with
Innards protected if flipper jams open
Designed to flip opponents over, not upwards
Hello. I am making some progress on my heavyweight and am looking for the parts for a flipper. Technobots no longer supply rams. Does anyone have any recommendations for a pneumatic ram or know of any for sale. Had a look on ebay but cannot seem to find anything suitable. Hi David, I am open to suggestions and recommendations. My heavyweight is about 1 meter long and is a wedge shape. So from what I have read I would be looking for something with a resonable stroke length. As I said I am open to any suggestions. Tks Chris

Hi Woody, I have read the various articles on the web so I am really looking for all the components needed to have a go at a flipper. I am not looking for a huge performance to start with. Perhaps something that will work resonably well but really some parts so I get started and get some experience. So I am really looking for the Ram, pipes, valves.
