bit of a question regarding drills, for an upcoming beginning class in australia the robots have to be mostly MDF, so im making a horizontal crusher and was wondering -

ive got myself a 12v cheapy drill modified with a piece of m10 threaded rod on the shaft. ive seen a few european robots employ a drill as a crusher so if anyone could provide me with some details as to how much force i could expect from such a drill actuator that would be great (any pictures would be appreciated too)

I tried a similar thing for a lifting arm Glen but used an M8 thread instead of an M10. I was able to lift my bed with it on a direct one-to-one ratio. I dont know what weight my bed was but I was able to achieve a similar effect by using a wiper motor and a length of chain (rack and pinion style) so Im assuming that was roughly 24kg. (might have been more, might have been less). Theres a pic on my profile which I found on the Featherweights.org forum a couple of months back. Its a vertical crusher using a drill and some M8 rod. I dont know the name of the robot or who built it but looks as though it would be fairly effective so there may be a fair amount of force attainable for a horizontal crusher.

hiya lenny, the name of the robot is Loisteputki and it was built by me, the crusher had 120kg of force.. over that force-- one more burnt drill, so it was not a good solution. unfortunately i have lost a pic of it, ill see later on if i find one..

thanks guys, what would you say 120kg was capable of breaking? polycarb of any thickness?

im looking at getting my hands on a kiddy car gearbox as i gave my old one away dammit so a drill for now, just have to go easy on it

If you get a drill with a torque limiting system on it you could use that to protect the motor from stalling and burning out couldnt you.

that sounds about right, the stock ones wouldnt do it though, even on the highest setting it slips fairly early. im sure you could emulate it using a ball bearing sitting underneath a grub screw.. thats a good idea actually.

btw heres the little project ive been working on. its a cut down drill for a crusher in a beetleweight robot, im looking at cutting a keyway into the rear of the shaft and then screwing a nut onto the front. it makes the setup far more smaller ,lighter and reliable IMHO with the keyway.

i didnt test it on polycarb as i didnt have any of that stuff.. worked great on tincans and 15mm wood! i think i got the bent can or some pics of it somewhere, only if i could find those..

btw, my ex-teammate made some nice aluminium housings for drill gearboxes:

used them on loisteputki and few more robots, zero failures in around 15 matches + many hours of testing with them, i would machine some of them for me but i dont need them as i got some nice 1½hp+ drills for free..

Wow, its Glen! Hey man, good to see you are alive. I seem to have found my way over to this forum and let me tell ya, yall over on the other side of the water build some nice stuff! Different, but really nice. I hope that I will be able to bring some ideas into my bots and maybe give some pointers to you guys. I seem to be a noob again. Awwww, LoL!
