I just found somewhere that fan has been invented as a short form for fanatic. The first time it was used was probably to describe football supporters. Alas, I have no proof for it. But it certainly proves my assumption about fans being brainless idiots when they keep on ranting about faded glory.

Eddy is right when he states that the sport is evolving. You all know that Chaos 2 was retired because George felt it was no longer in the same league as the new robots. Nobody is ranting about the retirement of Chaos 2. Does that prove that Chaos 2 fans are not so rabidly obsessed with their idol ? I guess the answer to that question is yep.
You can cheer for a favourite but once a favourite chooses no longer to participate you must look for someone else to cheer for, fondly nurturing your sentiments about the old champ but firmly setting those aside for the new one. There are so many extraordinary good robots right now, why not cheer for them ?
