Guys,
Its time to get this Years Easter Rumble on the road! Most of you will
know that we were over ambitious last year, assuming there was a bottomless
pit of enthusiasm for live fighting robots. The overheads associated with
the Bentwaters venue were too much for the ticket sales, which fell well
short of the £55,000 needed to cover costs, so we lost around £10,000. No
joke and we owe money to roboteers and others. However, this year we return
to our roots at Debenham Leisure Centre, where our overheads are much
reduced and should enable us (with your help) to recover the position and
pay our creditors back (including roboteers).
The arena, as many of you will know, is a pretty solid affair, with a
substantial polycarb wall surrounding it about one metre outside its
periphery. Last year we introduced in and out gates to speed the flow of
robots, so it is a pretty good set up. Speaking of set up, if any help is
available before the event (event dates Saturday/Sunday 10th/11th April -
Easter weekend), we will start assembling arena/spectator seating/pits on
around the Wednesday that week - 7th April. Any assistance will be
gratefully received, as will the dismantling operation on Easter Monday 12th
April.
We are operating in close association with the Fighting Robots Association
(the FRA) and Jonno and his Roaming Robots team have agreed to run the event
for us. In the past my brother Roy and I have tried to run the show in its
entirety and not had a lot of fun as a result of the stress that went with
it. So we are content to let Jonno and his crew take up the challenge of
providing you with an event to remember. I am sure that they will use a
format that meets with the approval of the majority of you to ensure maximum
enjoyment for all.
Ed Hoppitt has offered to operate the electronic entry system and
accommodation booking through the Rumble website - http://www.robotrumble.co.ukwww.robotrumble.co.uk and
will set that part of the operation in motion very shortly. In the past,
there has been substantial waste through accommodation bookings not then
taken up, often by young people who hope to be there but then cannot. To
overcome that problem accommodation is offered by the event at the nearby
Travelodge to Heavy Weight teams only at the rate of one family room per
entrant. Heavy Weight teams that bring other weight robots will be most
welcome however, so that we have a variety of entertainment. We will
welcome all other weights of Robots below Heavy status, but on a non
accommodation paid basis. Please make clear through the entry form your
Team Name and the Robots you wish to enter, together with their weight
status. We are setting a Heavy Weight numbers limit at 40 in the knowledge
that last minute drop outs usually reduce the numbers to 30, the minimum we
dare function with for a two day event, in view of terminal failures during
the four shows (one each morning and afternoon each day). Should you enter
after the 40 limit is reached, do not be deterred as a reserve list is then
formed, most of which are accepted by the time the event is on.
When I put out a notice in late 2003 stating our intentions, a goodly number
of Robots Teams immediately responded, wanting to be there. I have to ask
those teams to register their intentions on the electronic entry forms to
maintain good order, but I will list the responses received. I am not 100%
certain what weight some of the robot names are, so would ask you to clarify
please when entering your details. We will run our usual Social Evening at
the Leisure Centre on the Saturday Evening, which gives Roboteers the
opportunity for a good old chin wag and get together. David and the
Gladiator Team have offered to bring their mobile disco for the evening and
I have accepted that offer. David tells me he has been operating it for 37
years and produces a wide mix of music and entertainment which reflects many
decades of favourites. I hope that meets with your approval. Craig Danby
kindly offered to organise the antweight competition and we are pleased to
accept that offer. Other offers of help have been received from John
Frizell and Mike Lambert and I would ask them to clarify please the dates
when they might be available, as well as hearing from any other volunteers
who would like to help in some way together with dates etc. Last years
refreshment wagon lady has offered to be with us again; I think her burgers
etc were well received, so I have answered her in the affirmative. Bill is
on hand to serve as our referee again and Geoff is OK to inspire the
audiences. Dave will set up the lighting as before. I shall be asking the
Gribbles if they can be Judges again and Rex Garrod will be asked to join
them, along with Arfa, if he can make it.
Here then is the list of Robot names which were lodged with me last year and
which I would ask to confirm their intentions through the Rumble website:
Bigger Brother (+Dalek and other contraptions); Pussycat (+Kitty+Flowrate);
Tornado; M2; Mighty Mouse; Merlin (+Blazer+Savage+Alpha+Delta+Wizard); Mute;
Toecutter; Blitz; Steel Sandwich; Savage Toaster; Judge Shred; TX108
(+Gianto); Tanto (+Katana); AIR by Swanaldo; Roobarb; DTK + Bits + Bobs.
If I have got some of it wrong in this list, I apologise and please correct
me. If I have missed someone who asked to enter, I apologise and please
correct me.
If you have any strong views on the format for the event it is probably best
you contact Jonno direct, otherwise send to me and I will forward to him.
Any other queries, please contact me. If I have missed some vital
information from the above, please tell me. CO2 will be provided as always,
together with workshop facilities.
More soon.

My apologies to all - my spare time for doing robot work has been in short supply over the past week with things at work and Ive not had the time to put up the registration forms.
I can confirm that they WILL be up this week, and Ill post on this thread when they go live.
My sincere apologies for the delay.
