By series three of Robot Wars, if you did not have a Srimech or were invertible you were trusting to luck that you wouldn't be up ended, I had a primitive scrimech in the form of elongated castors stuck out of the sides on death warmed up to which Jonathan Pierce asked the question "what on Earth are they for !"-well Jonathan the point of the castors was if the robot got flipped at the side the robot would in theory scoot along the arena floor rather than be up ended.
Now back to the subject matter-My featherweight robot Project Fear has been around a few years now but did not have an effective Srimech so I have done some major alterations to said robot create one.
I have dispensed with the winch at the front and replaced it with a heavy duty grinder gearbox which I found in a skip and also mounted a more powerful drill directly driving the gearbox to negate the use of chains, which tended to keep flying off.
When I first tried the new concept on a bench test the robot tended to lift so far, lean to one side and just pull out the weapon from under itself.
I found the cause of this to be because the weapon is not central on the robot so added a stiff rod to the side of the weapon to give a more even lift and it now works in practice-the heat of battle might be a different battle.
Here's some pictures to show the difference.
