I was gonna say I've had this before and it ended up being that the transmitter was trying to mix as well as the vtail mixer. On some of the transmitters there is a jumper or switch in the battery bay that toggles mixing on and off. Check for that, and if no joy, as nick said lose the vtail and USB the transmitter to enable mixing directly.
