Thread: motor controller help.

I had a similar project recently restoring a ride on electric train, which ran on 24V and had roughly the same top speed. I used one of these 40A Controllers. I unsoldered the potentiometer and added wires so I could put the controller out of the cab.

They're remarkably good considering the price; had it pulling at the limit of what the motor could take for a lap of the track, and the controller was still barely warm. There's also a 60A version for much the same price.

For forward and reverse, I just used a large switch to change the motor wires over; for this kinda thing you don't need or really want to go from forward to reverse in a hurry, so having a switch is not a bad option. You could set it up so that the potentiometer was controlled via a foot pedal, and then have a switch to reverse the motor direction on the dashboard.
