Hi,
Got a Spectrum DX6 transmitter which is probably 6 or 7 years old now.
When turned on it lasts for about 2 seconds then turns off with a long sustained screech.
It looks to me like the battery has had it. Is this likely?
If so is it worth replacing the battery or am I better off getting a new Tx entirely?

All things considered, you're better off buying a DX6i, because DX6's are 'DSM' technology, whereas DX6i is DSM2, which is what all new receivers are, and you can get some perfectly useable ones on the same band/technology for a lot less than you'd pay for a Spektrum brand RX.
That was what I was thinking Dave... Is there any non-spectrum brand you would suggest in particular? For heavyweights and featherweights?

Just to add my experience, we have had multiple issues without DX6i's. Binding and failsafe issues mainly. Strangely some combinations of TX and RX work and others don't.
But as for going non spektrum, it seems sill to me to spend £500+ on a robot and then control it with the cheapest TX you can get. Its your link to the machine and if a £50 TX fails you could loose a substantial amount of a £500+ robot. There are TX's from Hi-tec and a few others but Spectrum is the most common.
I would get either a DX5e with one of the known working orange receivers or do it properly and get a DX7S which people seem to have better luck with than the DX6i's.
I see. What are the benefits of the DX7S over the DX5e?

No half-ass mixing (mixing on a DX5 limits the channels to 50% range)
Multi model memory (no adjusting trs for different robots, just select a saved model with all the trims in place).
Adjustable dual rates and mixing rates
Multiple mix methods (if you drive in an odd manner).
I have a DX5e with an Orange R620, works fine but it's very basic, also a bit cheaper if you're on a budget. Once I'd learned how to work it properly, it's a decent bit of kit.
Would definitely look at higher up the range, but it's definitely very useable.
