Thread: axe weapon help

  1. #1
I was hoping that someone could help me with the calculations at the bottom of this page. http://www.robowars.org/wikka/ElectricAxeWeapons i think it is to work out gear ratio. My axe weighs 1.3 kilos it is 40cm long i am using a 300w motor. I think tjats all the specs that are needed, thanks.

Nope you need Motor RPM too.

    I calculated 0.276 seconds, 82.8J & 108.696 rpm.

1.3kg on a 40cm axe arm should be interesting. Have you started the build on this yet? I will see if I can upload my axe calculator this week on the Robo Challenge website as that will be usefull for you (saves working it out for every minor change).

    Good luck with it

An axe calc will be awesome!
How important do you think the head weight is? I get the impression that most the sucessful axes have relatively light axes (arms included) but a lot of power in the throw.
Plus they always hit the other robot mid travel and that arm's attached at 13.6kgs of robot.

In pneumatic robots you tend to want to keep a light weight axe head, in an electric robot it tends to be a heavier head (within reason) works a lot better. I'm going for a 2kg axe head on a 400mm axe arm. I should have about 9000w behind it to get moving, so seeing how well 300w works with the same length and decent weight on is going to be interesting!

Do you have a link to the motor your using? If so I'll take a look and see what ratios it's best for you to use in the morning.
If that's a 12v rating, I would see if you can look at squeezing it closer to 24v to quadruple the power to 1200w. It should make quite a big difference to the effectiveness of your axe.
