The cells are stuck together quite well and you risk spliting the sleaving by pulling them apart, I don't think any eo's would want modded lipos in use.

Check to make it official but I don't think many people would even try.
One wrong move and you haven't got a battery but an incendiary device.

Not to mention you could give yourself some toasted fingers if you accidentally touched 2 contacts. I put 5mm deep holes on my thumb and index finger with a pair of 1.5V NiMHs when I was building my first ant... stung like a (insert appropriate word here) for 2 months.

Sell the current one, and buy the right one.

Also there not put together as easy as Nicads etc... The cell tabs are crimped together with a special machine, not soldered... And I think the cables that are soldered onto the tabs are held on with solder that melts at a higher temperature then normal... So hard to remove.

25-30 quid will get you a perfectly suitable new 4s LiPo, and you get to keep the current one for a machine that will take 5s.

Or as Mario said, as long as the battery has had a healthy charge life you should be able to sell it and cover the bulk of the cost of a new one, if not cover it entirely.
