The polycarb hubs could work well. I have been using polycarbonate hubs in Colson wheels for years and they have survived direct spinner hits and have never broken. It really depends on how thick your hubs are.

I am thinking if I should, but the cost is quite prohibitive the motors alone would be £700 and this for a robot that would never win anything! (but that's not a major concern)
I would like to run it on steam but for the shows insurance sake, I think I would use compressed air I have looked into this for other projects,
The idea is basically a polycarbonate box with 4 spoked wheels lots of copper and brass rivets.
The engines shown have a reversing leaver that can be connected to servos for the steering so with 2 engines I could tank-steer the thing, do you think they would allow me a weight advantage for a steam powered featherweight?

Some pictures of the new project a pneumatic walker, this is going to take a long time to finish but you have to start somewhere.
The configuration is ATM 8 legs, 2 degrees of movement, 16 actuators and at least 2 on board compressors.
The pictures are of the function mock-up with mechanical valve control, and the next 2 are work in progress to make the leg patterns to get the shape and distance right before cutting 8 of them out of 20mm HDPE, at least that's the plan to start with.

OK the question is how much pressure can a 1.25Ltr bottle of pop take before it goes, well POP!!

The system I'm using on the walker is very low pressure (sub 50psi) so to save weight and increase buffer storage I'm doing tests.

Please don't be fooled by this I am designing probably the most powerful Featherweight axe/sword robot ever made. the bottles 2Ltrs each are connected by 22mm diameter copper tube, the flow rate through the proposed valve means the sword will work at maximum efficiency through out it's travel.

Between 400 & 600psi typically. Depends a lot on temperature and type of bottle. The smooth walled bottles perform better than faceted (like coke bottles).
When they blow, they make a loud bang - but the shrapnel is so light and encounters so much aerodynamic drag that it doesn't present much danger of injury. I still wouldn't want to be next to it.
I used to have access to dry-ice. Much fun putting dry ice in a bottle, screw the cap on and wait for the bang! The figures above were obtained using a pressure gauge on the bottle.

No size or weight limitations start up acceleration ramp can be 20seconds or more! and no breaking required. those seem a little bit on the big side for a gyro are they used in feathers or Beetle?
