Thread: Which regulator?

  1. #21
Wow! thanks for all the feedback its all appreciated...

David, will try to keep weight as low as possible but I doubt I would be allowed to participate with you guys as our rules are different eg we're allowed to use Lipo batteries etc.
We got an arena, but maybe it will need to be a bit bigger and sturdier this year as the bots are improving year after year.

As I've said earlier I'm using a Low press system - I'm not going to build a custom actuator for FP and anyway I'd rather go step by step. Think it will get too expensive for a FP.

The 5 way valve is rated at 8bar working press but the max press on most of them is 12bar. I'll take a gamble with it and see what it can do (its not expensive anyway) Don't think it will leak but maybe it will get stuck - I'll get my brother to tweak the solenoid in that case...

Mouldy I was looking at something similar to that as it regulates to my required pressure but don't know if its been tried and tested by someone else - a trevor reg at £45ish sounds like a better bet tho.

Will have a good look to your FW rules then and see if its possible to keep in line with them as well - but I really doubt we'll be able to contain the weight by that much, the frame and armour will be quite heavy, same with the drive system and flipper.

Thanks Trevor, please keep me updated, I'm also asking around maybe I'll manage to find a used one as I really have to start with the build!

Will have a look at the 20oz bottle to see what's available and type of fittings used, have to keep in mind that I'm limited in size and weight and I'm not sure if a 20 oz bottle will fit in my setup. I have not purchased any bottles yet so I'm still free to shop around but it would be appreciated if someone could post a link to where I could get a bottle with the correct thread to fit the Tevor reg.

''Maybe we could all have a summer holiday, robots in the day, beers at night.....'' You're welcome - sound like good plan

Need some advice re. armour and overall body construction. Before this build, we always used a sort of monocoque construction basically from aluminium chequer plate about 4mm thick but last year we had the body punctured by one of the competitors using a horizontal spinner so I'm thinking about adding armour to the body.
Don't want to go for something heavy as weight is limited to 17 kg and the flipper pneumatics are quite on the plus side I guess...so I'm looking at aluminium again. From my experience the strongest Alu available is 7075 T6, but I don't have access to a thick enough section, I was thinking something like 4mm. I found this:
    http://www.aluminiumwarehouse.co.uk/sheet_calc.php
    http://www.aluminiumwarehouse.co.uk/Alu ... be_(6082T6)_100_mm_x_100_mm_x_2_mm/product_info.html

I would have liked to add an external layer of tool steel or something similar but i cant find a thickness in the range of 2-2.5 mm so instead I'm thinking of using a power hacksaw blade like this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 500wt_1180
Its made of spring steel - its hard and tough and not too expensive

Any advice is more than welcome

We all use hdpe- it's really good at absorbing impacts, easy to work with and is held together by wood screws, its light (about 1g/cm^3) and very few spinners can get through 15-20mm hdpe.

Well I'm thinking about that as well as it looks pretty tough and nice to work with but then I saw this on youtube :

and I sort of changed my mind....
