A soleno¯d is a coil that moves a center part.

The biggest coils suitable for featherweights can move at best a pound, if the time is short and the coil overvolted to the melting point.

In other words, a soleno¯d is handy to control things that can do bigger jobs.
A Relais is in most cases a soleno¯d that closes or opens a switch.
