Thread: High power drive motors

    Trying to did some good motors for my new rebuild

    I know about the speed 900 etc but would prefer something drill motor style

    Looking into dewalt motors, but others that are similar but good power?

    Got to try and balance cost aswell so would speed 900's and gears etc come out less than dewalts?

    Speed 900 , currently on the Graupner website ‚53 each. Depending on wheelsize, but lets take a 6-1 gearratio on a 100mm wheel.

    Z12 mod 1 is the smallest I would put on the 6mm axle of the 900. £4.69 each.
    Z72 mod 1 is a heavy and more expensive gear £22.78 each (and 540 grams)

    Don't be fooled, a Speed 900 on 12V will shred plastic gears like chewing gum.

    Speed will be around 20 km/h. (pricetag for motors and gears total £143, without P&P or anything)
    Also, a strong drive needs a good speedo.
    An Mk 1 XXL doesn't cut the cheese when the you go over 16V.

    You could use a 2 stage gearbox, using a smaller first stage and then belt drive to get 4 wd.
    Adding a timing belt second stage. Adds at least £80 to the setup.

    In other words, a seriously powerfull drivetrain for a feather will cost a bundle.

    Found speed 900's for £36.50 which ain't too bad

    It's just trying to find a set of gear (which shouldn't be too hard) then belts for 4wd

    Technobots has the gears , timing pulleys and belts. (got the prices from the site)

    And if I calculate. ‚53 = £43.74. So yes, £36.5 is better.
    (Unless those are rebatched copies, cheaper by the dozen on Ebay)

    You need to be sizing up something serious to control it. Possibly even up to a sidewinder which I believe dave is using in 540

    will need to cost things all up as its basically a new robot, looks like it will get expensive

    Although, mk1 xxL could do 20a, and you say that they cut out with speed 900's at 16v

    Thinking about what parts I have around, 30a electronize at 14.4v could do the job? Not sure, just putting it forward

    Yes Matt, I do say that a Speed 900 based drive with a low gearratio will draw so much current the XXL's will cut out. That's the job of a current limiter, ain't it?
    BonX and Kashei both use a sidewinder for a simular drivetrain. BonX currently uses a 2 stage , Kashei a reinforced MSR 12-72, and both are 6S or equivalent in battery.

    The 30A electronises will do the job. But I think you can smoke'm.

    Finding a Sidewinder. Doubtfull, people who use them won't seperate from those easely.

    And with a pricetag of $499 new at Robotpower, it's a rather expensive , but small and light speedo.

    Unfortunatly, it seems the Scorpion XXL v2 can't do mirror mode like the 1 did, making it a 1 channel speedo with 2 times the amp capacity.

    What brings another option for a high power drivetrain.

    Using more, but cheaper/weaker motors to do the job. The 4 Batterydrill/GR01 machines are around

    And it is concievable to do a 6 or even 8 wheel monster with each wheel seperatly driven. But for that, there is a special problem. Making sure all the wheels can reach the ground on an uneven floor.

    That may well be something ill have to consider

    going for 6WD on 6 motors would give great pushing power, but how many esc's could you get away with?

    2 higher power for 4 of the 6 wheels on a potential 6wd and 2 slightly lower for 2, all these being electronize
