The scoring format is as follows:

4 points for a complete KO of your opponents
3 points for a win (by judges' decision)
    2 points for 2nd place
1 point for last place/entering the arena
0 points for being unable to enter the arena

The top ten robots with the highest scores go through to the knockout stages on the Sunday.

How long is the imobilisation count out? I can't remember.... 30s?

  3. #293
Yeah, if you go in the pit or stop moving, you've got 30 seconds to either show movement or get out of the pit.

One battle rule I could do with clarification on: in previous years, if a robot has lost one side of its drive and can only drive in circles, the opponent has been able to leave it alone and the semi-immobile robot has been counted out after 30 seconds. But at the 2011 champs, there were a few fights where a robot only had one side of drive for longer than 30 seconds yet could still go on to win the fight if it had somehow caused more damage (or the other robot drove down the pit etc). For example, Drumroll spent the entire three minutes of one fight with only one side of drive, yet came out with two points for 2nd place because Asgard got stuck on the arena wall for the last minute of the battle and couldn't move.

Is that something that has changed in the battle/judging rules that I missed, or was it something implemented at GSL last year to try and make some battles last a little longer? And what will the ruling be this year?

As this is a grey area it is a place where judges must interpret rules.

The rules state for a knockout -

    Knockout
Any robot that remains stationary for more than 30 seconds without being in contact with another robot will be deemed to have been knocked out. This rule will also apply to any robot that becomes trapped by any part of the arena or arena hazards, including the pit. Clusterbots, those that have two or more independent fighting segments, if one segment becomes immobile and or is completely damaged the complete machine will be deemed knocked out. Robots in the pit at the end of the fight shall be deemed knocked out.

Regretfully as each situation is unique, including when is a robot classed in the pit. The rules also dont mention having one side of your drive disabled. I imagine this is because some robots when they lose one side are stuck on the spot therefore immobile, however robots like Venom can drive around the arena with just one side (fwds goes fwd and rev turns) this certainly isnt immobile as Venom can chase other robots, albeit with more difficulty. I think the Judges simply have to be consistent throughout the competition. If you can still take the fight to your opponent then your still in, also if your opponent is still taking the fight to you maybe you should still be in (if your in the battle to be attacked then your inthe battle) This is just my opinion.

It may be worth having the judges go through a few scenarios during the roboteers briefing at the start of the day?

I think the decisions have been consistent from battle to battle, it's just that there seems to have been a change in what counts as being mobile/immobile from previous events. If the judges are able to state at the beginning of the event whether being reduced to one side of drive counts as immobile or not, it would be helpful. A few scenarios could also be useful, although I appreciate that there isn't a huge amount of time in the mornings to have detailed discussions on the specifics of judging.

Just as long as we know, then it should all be good
I wouldn't want to be mucking around in a fight, thinking that I'll be getting counted out because I've only got drive on one side, if it turns out that I could still win the fight through getting a decisive hit on the opponent.

But it is indeed a grey area, and I don't envy the judges position in some fights with difficult calls (especially regarding the pit!). I suppose if you're still moving on one wheel, you're still a threat to the opposition, and so long as you're a threat, there's still a battle to be won....

The competition will be judged to FRA competition regulations. These are available from our rules and safety page.

To clarify, immobile indicates the robot is not moving. Loss of drive on one side of the robot typically does not stop the robot from moving but does show damage and will count against you. However this can be a grey area, every robot is different and some will be able make their way around the arena with loss of drive, others might just be able to turn on the spot.

To make our lives easier please cause as much damage as possible and put your opponent down swiftly.

    Haha, Brilliant.

I know there was much controversy about this last year and was hoping it wouldn't become the elephant in the room this year. But it does need to be said and I'm glad you brought it up Jamie.

Boner vs Beauty 4 last year a prime example.
Boner dominated that match, but lost drive on one side. Despite this it caused decent damage, stopped Beauty's flipper from working, was clearly in control, even got hits with half drive, but lost on a immobility decision.
My interpretation of this would be that, losing one side of drive would be very detrimental to your Style and Control points, but in terms of Boner's Damage and Aggression, and those in comparison to what Beauty would have scored should have give Boner the match.

But that's just my interpretation, and I appreciate the judges have a tough job and that their decision is final.

Yes and indeed this was a hard call, but it was called on the basis that Beauty 4 continued to attack and show good aggresion and boner was simply unable to continue the fight and was pretty much stuck on the spot. Had the breakdown happened nearer the end of the match the call would have likely gone the other way.

The bottom line with these things is the judges decision is final and they don't have favourites unlike the TV series!
Last year Seraph didn't loose any qualifying fights, If memory serves me correctly it won all but one fight. still this was not enough for it to continue in the comp. Sometimes the system works against you!
In the Annihilator it came second, after a decision that in my opinion should have gone Seraphs way.
    My point is:-

Hard decisions against you is something you just have to go with.

As for the rule on one side immobilized how about,

If after 30 seconds the robot has not contacted the other robot, it is counted out
