Sawbot 3000 first build

So as a father and son team our first build is sawbot 3000 ( if not already taken) I asked my son to think of a name and he came up straight away with that, so we went with it haha. We are building twin saw spinner robot. And have the following on the shopping list ticked off; X2 12v cordless drills. Stripped down and modified the motors clutch mechanisms.

X2 goolrc 80A 6-12v brushed esc's with Bec's


Floureon 3s 20c 11.1v 2300mAh battery


X4 100mm polythene wheels (not happy with way they fit so looking at replacements)


Lipo balance charger extension lead


Starmax 2.4ghz transmitter with 8ch receiver


42teeth pulley 8mm bore


16teeth pulley 5mm bore


Timing belt for above pulleys


X2 8mm pillow block bearings (for weapon shaft)


X2 sets of motor mounts


Aluminium boxing for chassis


X4 teethed blades (x2 spares)


14awg wire (black and red)

Nice Sketchup skills! Are you building a FW (13.6kgs) if so then it's worth pointing out that there only 1 full combat event (i.e. with spinners) a year, and that's the international champs.
I built a saw bot a few years ago, and although a good laugh was largely ineffective (the blades just stop the moment they touch anything) and the braised tips on the blades just fling off (be careful when testing at home).

Thanks for the advice. To be honest we just going to build it then see where we can go with it. Yeah the blades will just stop but my lad wants it like that so that's how it's going to be. Haha. Sketch up isn't mine but someone else's. Yes we building a fw well that's the plan

Is this just a matter of modern robots being too 'ard? Way back on Robot Wars, Dead Metal's saw seemed to go through a lot of stuff.

Dead Metal's saw had a 6-7 horsepower engine behind it though - and, more pertinently, whatever it was cutting was clamped in place and not likely to hit it from the side. It's the same logic for drills/milling cutters/chainsaws/a lot of the other weapons that often get suggested - they're good if the thing they're cutting is held still!

There are feathers with more kinetic energy in the disk weapons than Dead Metal or even Mathilda in het last incarnation in Series 7.
And good feathers are build to survive that.

Armor hardness isn't the main issue. But hardox, the most used "hard armor" material is hard and tough... Cutting that in a non clamped situation. Try to chainsaw a hard oak log that rolls away....

So maybe worth thinking about some sort of grabber mechanism to make it more effective

honestly just build something cool and work on it from there yer you can go down the road of engineering a superbot made from mythical metals or you can buy a load of hdpe plastic and build a brick and have some fun i like the sketch up very nice

dead metals saw blade was a specialized friction saw that had hundreds of little teeth that only nibbled at its victim but because of the number of them they could go through just about anything its the same saw the fire service use to cut up cars when rescuing people because it can cut just about anything

Some blades are banned under the rule-set as the blades shatter.

Does the ban cover having hardened steel teeth on a disc otherwise designed to bend at failure? Because the danger with a commercially available hardened steel sawblade is that the whole thing would explode sending large chunks of metal flying at high speeds.

Yes, the ban does include any commercialy available blade that can shatter under impact. Even the shatterable parts are only the teeth.

I myself favor the "monoblock" idea.
A disk/drum/eggbeater fabricated from 1 piece of metal that resists shattering whatsoever.
Hardox or Cruesabro comes to mind.

The rule, or rules in this case, are specifically -

12.3 Rotating Weapons
The speed of any rotating weapons - e.g. circular saws, carbon or steel cutting discs - must not exceed the
manufacturer's specification. The manufacturer's specification must be available for inspection.

12.4 Hardened Blades
Commercially manufactured, hardened steel blades that may shatter are not allowed.

So far as I know there would only be 2 types of commercial blade permitted -

Friction Saw Blades - http://sheffsaws.com/circular-saws/friction-saw/ - The same type that Dead metal used. All 1 piece with a hardened edge. Expensive!

Diamond Abrasive - http://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-se...0-x-20mm/32833 - These are 1 piece of metal with an abrasive powder glued to the surface. Rather than shattering the abrasive section would turn almost to dust.

However, since I am pretty sure you would bust a commercial blade every fight I would recommend getting a disc custom cut from Hardox or another type of wear steel. This would only only be more effective but cheaper. I can work with you to design one to fit your needs and there are many other people out there with access to CAD as well.

I dunno, you'd have to double check with the event organisers and ruleset. If you put anything on a robot that spins quick you immediately limit yourself to the one event a year that can cope with featherweight spinners. If you wanna go to a few build a non-spinning weapon.

That would be great if you could be appreciated. Think a custom made blade from Hardox would be best

Ah, yes. I will clarify. Spinners are not permitted at all events. Only those with Class 1 Arena's.

Since the only Class 1 arena's in the UK are the new Robot Wars arena in Glasgow (which we can't use) and the Robochallenge FW arena, which is only used twice a year at most, your robot would be limited to just 2 events a year: The World Champs at Gadget Show Live (which just happened) and possibly an event at Fleet Air Museum (which doesn't always happen).

The rules above 12.3 & 12.4, would still apply at the Class 1 arena events.

Is this for vertical spinners aswel as horizontal ones. I mean could I enter more events with vertical spinner? (Thinking of a slight plan change)

nah, they have the same rules as horizontals

It doesn't matter what angle the weapon is at... 45drgs, 90drgs, 3.1415926drgs...

if its over 500RPM it counts as a spinner, and even then the EO has final say so I wouldn't even bother taking one to a live event.

Stumbling upon this thread, and it sparked my curiosity.
What are the rules in regards to making a robot that looks like a full-body spinner (blades of some description fixed to the outer shell), but it simply rotated on the spot using it's drivetrain (like TV Series 2 Spin Doctor)?

The chances a normal drivetrain FBS runs over 500 rpm are slim. Also, it's difficult to forbid robots to spin on the spot.

Interesting. After doing a few calculations, I've worked out that a robot which can do 10mph in a straight line would need a track width of 17cm to spin at 500rpm. It actually seems rather feasible for a FW, and more powerful motors could give it even more potential!

That will be a very nervous machine to drive straight.

But my point stands, try to forbid a robot to spin on the spot.

The problem with that idea is when the bot is spinning in place, its not advancing into an opponent and doing any damage. Do some research in to 'Meltybrain' robots, which combine spinning the shell with driving. On the few occasions builders have gotten them right, they have been very effective.

Since you cant advance on your opponent, and you are entirely relying on them, you will get very limited bite, and at 500rpm you wont be able to do much damage, even when spinning 13.6kg of steel.

If you fitted say 4 drill motors in a short but wide 4WD config I am sure you could get a straight driving robot that did 500rpm on the spin. Build a test bed. See what happens IMO.

Help needed please. I want a bit of my wheels to show on both sides so it can be driven upside down if flipped. I am making my own motor mounts but can't work out the measurement to make the wheels show. My wheels are 120mm and the height of the bit including armour is 102. What measurements do I need to work of to make the mounts sit right so wheels protrude each side. Hope this makes sense!?!?

You need a 51mm axle height in that case - the measurement will always be half the body height regardless of how big the wheels are!
