I think these robots that become an exercise in engineering are good because they're what we all aspire to. Whether they're more effective than a cheap robot is open for discussion, but they have a place none the less.

It's a fair question! The TV does wonderful things for drama, but not engineering! Neither gearbox is particularly complex. The problem with RAPID in S9 was it was not designed it to be stripped and rebuilt in 2hours. We were tired, it wasn't worth the stess! The RAPID gearbox is spur gears, motors to wheels - it would be solid if we hadn't left some swarf in it!
Saturns or drills would be more than fine. But where's the fun in that!?
A very fair point indeed! Dave is right, we all aspire to have brilliantly engineered robots like yours, you'd win the award if they still had it. I hope it has the power of a heavyweight flipper, it would be interesting to see how it fares in the new live shows.
Love it. To add to the discussion: For me, almost all the fun of this hobby comes from designing the robots and making great looking parts. But for others, the driving/fighting part is the important bit. So I guess its all down to what people enjoy doing. Also, your bitbucket links don't embed any more
although agree that people do this hobby for different reason, some for the trill of the fight and others for the trill of the build, i feel seeing all epic pieces of engineering can also put some people off. It would be great if there some newbie only fights so they could a good feel for this fun hobby
I hope you're aiming for insomnia with this Josh
