Funnily enough the silver steel that I linked is cheaper by a couple of pounds, but I'm glad you linked it either way, as I'm not sure what the price would be when I ask it to be delivered, so thank you very much Alex.

I'm also deciding to push the boat out a little and I'm going to ask for keyways to be made. (Shock, gasp, the horror, especially when I've talked down upon it...) But I don't know what a decent thickness for the key steel would be if I use the 22mm silver steel. Any suggestions?

    DJ.

I think I can say "Hey, I can stop posting on here and I can try to start making a diary now."

Thank you for all of your help, and once I find a decent camcorder, I'll start vlogging it... would that be the correct term? I dunno.

http://www.roymech.co.uk/ is another great site for this and other information.

Key dimensions are listed here: http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tabl...ys/keyways.htm

    Hi Beast team.

If that's the case, then what would be a better alternative? Because right now, it's going to have to be Silver Steel. "After a few years" doesn't exactly mean anything, especially when you can spot it and replace it. :S

Silvered steel is fine for axles, if fatigue is a concern just swap them out yearly. Remember bots should be built around maintenance, if it takes you longer than an hour to swap an axle you've gone wrong.

How many fights did the axle go through though John? I'm going to assume it was a hell of a number of even friendly fights. If I have something that lasts that long in my robot it's doing well.

All my axles are silver steel. Apollo uses 17mm but thats a short length support both sides and the wheel is the full width of the gap, so not really anywhere for it to bend. I would typically say at least 20mm for supported both sides and 25mm if just supported on one, but these all depend on the lengths and wheels.
