The Judges

The robots in the arena have 5 minutes to immobilise their opponent, if after time is up and no robot is immobile and there is no clear winner, the judges have to decide. The three judges mark on style, control, damage and aggression giving points to each robot in a fight. Of these four factors damage and aggression will be the primary criteria for determining the winner.

It is often very difficult to make decisions, especially when the robots look like they both have won. There are often controversial decisions which get the crowd booing and us at home too but the judges decision is final!

The judges have changed slightly over the years but the three we have today are:

Prof. Noel Sharky

Prof. Noel Sharky

He is professor at Sheffield University and Creative Robotics unit at Magna. He is also technical expert on Techno Games and can be seen often talking to Philippa Forrester during the show. He loves creating predatory robots which feed the energy off other robots.

Prof. Martin Smith

Prof. Martin Smith

Martin Smith is professor of the Mobile Robots Research Unit at Central England University, technical expert on Techno Games and president of the Cybernetics Society. He built a robot called CRUELLA which he entered into the first two series of Robot Wars.

Mat Irvine

Mat Irvine

Mat has not only been a judge on Robot Wars but he has been right there at the beginning as one of the original team members who started it all! He used to work for the BBC Visual Effects Department where he designed effects for such shows as Doctor Who and Blake's 7 and working on shows like The Adventure Game. After that he did co-producing and other projects. Yes, his career certainly has been in television! He is also keen in science and astronomy as well as robots.
