Thread: 40MHz to 2.4GHz conversion

  1. #21
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I've just finished converting my Skysport 6 to 2.4GHz.

Instead of the Corona system I linked to in previous posts, I used the FrSky system (pronounced FreeSky, but I just call it Frisky )

Anyway, I've had minor problems with the Corona receivers in the past. At the 2010 UK Champs, it worked fine on the Friday and Saturday but when I turned it on on the Sunday just to check everything was working, the receiver was completely dead. Post-event I tried every combination of tx/rx power-ups and different distances etc but nothing was working.
So I bought a new receiver for the 2011 champs which worked much better when it came to powering up (almost instantaneous) and it was working fine until my second fight on the Saturday when it just died mid-battle. Again, several attempts and combinations for powering it up proved fruitless. I'm not sure if it's the shocks of robot combat that are causing the failures but shelling out £10 for a new receiver each event seems a bit uneconomical.

I hadn't really considered the FrSky system until Alan fitted one in his transmitter and reported no issues with it. Having just installed mine, I powered up the transmitter and receiver, got it to bind without hassle, and then have had it working flawlessly so far. I can even turn the units on in close proximity without any problems (another issue with the Corona system).

The main differences between the Corona DIY module and the FrSky one are:

There are no mounting screws or a drilling template included in the FrSky set
The module that goes inside your transmitter is bigger than the Corona one.
The co-axial aerial is already soldered to the module board (you have to do it yourself on the Corona system)
It comes in a bag instead of a box :P

Price-wise, there€™s not much difference between the two. You still have to buy the receiver separately now but that means you can choose between a 4-channel, 7-channel or 8-channel receiver based on your needs.

I€™ll be giving it a good run out at the RL Edinburgh event so if it makes it through that, then it€™s already done better than the Corona system

Im just about to order another Frysky hack and RXs for our Dalek. I've ran a hacked one (on a 6exa) in my feather prototype and not had a problem. Im running a module based one (on a Futaba with 2 rx's on our mechanoid and not had a problem.
