As far as i am aware, i know there are some that spray gas in to a turbine that is attached to the disc, which spins it up fast. They only spray when they need to spin the disc up and then leave it to free wheel until it hits something.

I wouldnt go near petrol spinners. This is speaking from experience.

When you consider everything that can go wrong in a petrol engine with all its moving parts along with the unpredictability of the arena environment its not advisable.

Electric motors have all their torque at low RPM and so are therefore far better suited to spinning up discs. Petrol engines (roughly speaking) gain their torque at high rpm. This is why you need a clutch in a petrol powered spinner.

The way to get around the torque problems is to do what we did with typhoon 2 when we took it to the states. We fitted a 3hp mag along with the 5hp petrol engine. We used the mag to get the disc going and then cut it, allowing the petrol engine to kick in properly and take it all the way to the top end of the machines rpm. This just adds complexity to an already complicated system.

Dont get me wrong, it can work and work well it did for typhoon 2 but you have no idea of the weeks it took to get it working.

because you get a hell of a lot more energy in a 100g of petrol than you do in 100g of batteries and your petrol isnt counted in the weight limit.

Those were the reasons that we put one in T2
