i am thinking of purchasing a table saw, may be the one from argos, will this be able to cut through metal? and can hdpe be cut in this way? or will it start to melt?

Indeed, HDPE is a lot like wood in handling and a table saw will definatly do the trick. But metal, no that will not go well. most metals youll be best off with an angle grinder and jig-saw.

To be honest you are better off investing in a good hacksaw. You can cut steel with a jigsaw but it is noisy and the blades wont last much longer than 5 minutes.

I used a rip saw this is the tool that look a bit like a pistol drill but have a Jigsaw blade in the drill end. This cut the base for my robot in no time. The rule for metal cutting blades is you should always have one tooth in contact with the material at all times. this meens the gap between the saw teeth must be smaller than the width of the material to be cut.
