Moved to Linux

Ive been using PCs and Macs since they first came out. Macs have always been great but having one at home has usually out of my price range. So weve had windoze on our last half dozen home computers and everybody is used to it.
Ive wanted to use Linux at home but couldnt justify the amount of effort and the relearning for all the family.
So when Windoze crashed and I was faced with the usual recover the data to another drive and reinstall I made the switch.

It took a bit of effort to get the graphics right but its even more impressive than the Vids. Im really really really impressed. Did I mention that i was impressed. I think that gobsmacked at how good it is is closer.
Lots to learn but the rest of the family have taken to it with no problems.

XGL is great, I have been using Sabayon Linux with XGL enabled instead of Windows for a good few months now, and it has never gone wrong yet. Not a single crash or anything.

Super Karumba and an OSX bar next weekend.

I use Ubuntu 7.04 (Started with 6.06). I only use Windoze at work, and via VMWare Workstation so I can run Solidworks 2007 when in Ubuntu.

Ive been running SUSE since 7.x as a server environment at work. I wish Id got round to running it as a desktop environment at home earlier. XGL is great, lucky I had a graphics card that I could find drivers for.

The reason you moved to SUSE was due to a graphics API Terry ?

I run VMWare VI3 - and choose operating systems as appropriate for the task. Far more flexible approach than locking yourself to any one religion . Why have any OS installed on the bare metal when you can have a hypervisor !

VMWare! Woohoo We like VMWare in my house. We usually have 3-4 virtual machines running at any one time including the web server(s), and have a selection set up and ready to go if we need them.

Some of the the operating systems we run on a regular basis on both virtual and real PCs are Sabayon Linux, Gentoo, Windows 2000, XP, SUSE, CentOS, Ubuntu, DSL, Mint, Freespire and Windows 98, so we have plenty too choose from when we need a perfect OS for a task.

We used to run Red Hat 9 as well, but thats a bit old now. Most of the Linux ones run in virtual machines and do something website related or have done in the past.

I was really just after usability, stability etc. I know SUSE reasonably well and the the eye candy is great. Dont think that I want to get into VM as I dont really need it. I do need apache, PHP, mysql, ruby and rails for a project Im looking at. So any Linux variant would be OK but this is also the family PC. So its got to be pretty easy for everybody to use and have all the functions that they are used to. Windoze will do all of those but its just so poor in comparison.
