Thread: Cheaps welders in Aldi

If you are after a cheap stick welder get along to your local aldi. The new one that opened near (ish) me had some 80amp stick welders for £40 amongst other handy tools. Used a similar one for years before getting a TIG.

That's exactly what it is. Good for steel and hardox.

Not really powerful enought, rough guide is 30-40 amp per mm of steel rod being used, ie 3.2mm rod which is perfect for 4mm hardox would require around 120 amp minimum.but saying that would be a good starting point to build up from

I'd disagree. Pretty sure the stick welder I used years ago was around the same and I could blow through 4mm hardox if I wasn't careful. Although jamie would have to confirm as I think he still has it.

As a guideline 40A/mm thickness is correct, but quite often specifically with thinner material that might already be too high. I am really bad at arc welding (or any other for that matter but specially arc) but it is possible to get decent results on a small welder like that.
